Breaking: Bears Could Target Free Agent After Tough Injury

September 16, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

After losing cornerback Jaylon Johnson, probably for the season as of this posting, the Chicago Bears may target veteran Mike Hilton. According to breaking news, one of their best cornerbacks, Johnson, is out indefinitely as the Bears hope he doesn’t require surgery. It’s similar to the groin injury he had earlier this NFL Training Camp, but head coach Ben Johnson said it was a new injury that has nothing to do with what he has now, so the Bears are holding their breath for better news than expected. Since they’re 0-2 to start the season, they must do everything they can to change this defense around after giving up more than 40 unanswered points against Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions offense.

With Nickelback, Kyler Gordon is nursing an injury this year; it’s safe to say they need the depth to help Tyrique Stevenson, Jaylon Jones and Nahshon Wright. This is where Hilton comes into the equation, as he had a visit with the Philadelphia Eagles last week, but it didn’t lead to a contract agreement. Originally selected as an undrafted rookie in 2016, the former Ole Miss product spent part of his rookie season between the Jaguars and Patriots practice squads. However, Hilton had his best tenures in the league with the Steelers and Bengals, recording 520 total tackles, 56 deflections, six fumble recoveries and 13 interceptions.

Other Potential Suitors

Dallas Cowboys

Despite their thrilling overtime win over the New York Giants, the Dallas Cowboys are in dire need of a new cornerback. Giants quarterback Russell Wilson put up almost 500 passing yards against this secondary that still contained Trevon Diggs and Kaiir Elam as the starters for this unit. If they plan to miss out on DaRon Bland for more weeks, then they must address this cornerback and get a boost. They don’t need the best All-Pro cornerback, but someone who can stop those extra yards that the Cowboys can’t afford to give up.

These chunks of easy yardage could predict the outcome of each matchup for Dallas. Hilton might not be the best cornerback anymore, but he should be a reliable reliever for Elam, who hasn’t shown that he can stop the balls coming his way.

Kansas City Chiefs

Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs are off to one of the worst starts in a long time. With an offense that keeps depleting, there’s only one thing they could do here. They still have an explosive secondary unit between Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson, Chamarri Conner and Kristian Fulton, but they’re lacking depth here. With Nazeeh Johnson, Eric Scott Jr. and Deon Bush on IR, they could use Hilton to fill the depth chart and bolster this unit to keep Kansas City in close games at least.

New Orleans Saints

However, the New Orleans Saints should be desperate for a new cornerback in their unit. After losing Marshon Lattimore and Paulson Adebo, the team hasn’t found a viable replacement. Hilton probably won’t get an immediate start, but it would help Kool-Aid McKinstry and Alontae Taylor improve the secondary.
