According to ESPN analyst Matt Bowen, Loveland has transformed into a true matchup target in Johnson’s scheme.
“Over his past five games, Loveland has caught 20 of 26 targets for 290 yards and three scores,” Bowen wrote. “The rookie tight end can work the middle of the field on seams and in-breakers, plus Johnson will isolate Loveland in the red zone. This allows Loveland to use his foot quickness and frame to beat man coverage, which will be extremely important in the postseason.”
For a young quarterback like Williams, having a tight end who can separate late in the down or body up defenders in tight spaces is invaluable. It’s no coincidence that Williams’ efficiency has risen when throwing to Loveland.

Climbing the Rookie Rankings After a Slow Start
Loveland’s emergence hasn’t just been noticed on tape or in the box score. ESPN recently ranked him as the ninth-best rookie in the entire NFL, a notable jump considering he wasn’t ranked at all earlier in the year. His stats so far this season of 31 receptions for 406 yards and three TDs only tell part of the story. What stands out is how he’s creating those yards.
In a system that frequently uses multiple tight-end sets, Loveland has become a true security blanket for Williams over the past few weeks, as ESPN’s Jordan Reid noted that Loveland’s 2.5 yards after contact per reception is second among all tight ends this season. Being selected 10th overall came with hefty expectations, but Loveland is surpassing what many fans envisioned his role would be with the team in his rookie season.
With the postseason approaching, Loveland is positioned to be more than just a productive rookie; he could become one of the Bears’ most important players.
