Bears Could Eye Former Panthers’ 3-Time Pro Bowler

May 9, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Jadeveon Clowney

The Chicago Bears’ 2025 NFL Draft strategy has sparked some debate among fans and analysts, particularly due to their decision not to address the edge rusher position. While the Bears draft wasn’t a disaster by any means, there’s no denying that their defensive front could use reinforcements. Fortunately, it was reported that the Carolina Panthers released three-time Pro Bowler Jadeveon Clowney, potentially providing the Bears with an intriguing solution.

Clowney, 32, is a former No. 1 overall pick with over 400 total tackles, 58 sacks, and 139 QB hits over his 11-year career. He fits Dennis Allen’s mold for bigger edge rushers at 6’5″ and 266 pounds, and he had a productive season in 2024 with 46 total tackles, 5.5 sacks, and 22 assists.

Clowney has ranked in the top 50 amongst edge rushers the past three seasons, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF). For comparison, Montez Sweat was the 79th-ranked edge last season, and Clowney was the 47th-ranked edge.

Another set of impressive stats from Clowney’s 2024 season highlights just how effective he still is. He ranked third among all edge rushers in run-stop win rate at 32%, trailing only Maxx Crosby and Rashan Gary. Additionally, Clowney placed 13th in pass-rush win rate at 18%. His strong ability to defend the run, combined with his pass-rushing efficiency, makes him a highly valuable asset, and he could provide exactly the kind of veteran impact the Bears need to strengthen their defensive front.

Age is the biggest factor in bringing in Clowney, but it shouldn’t be an expensive pick-up. Clowney was set to make a base salary of $8.525 million with a cap hit of $13.775 million in 2025. Now that he’s a free agent, it shouldn’t cost more than around $4 million to bring him in on a one-year deal.

Other Pass Rush Options for the Bears

Beyond Clowney, the Bears have several notable free agent options still available if they want to bolster their pass rush. CBS Sports released some of the top remaining NFL free agents at every defensive position, listing Za’Darius Smith, who is coming off a nine-sack season with the Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions. Matt Judon is another option whom the Bears tried to trade for last season, and Von Miller is an interesting name if the Bears want a future Hall of Fame mentor.

The Bears have been quiet regarding the pass rush position, and there’s no clear indication if general manager Ryan Poles and company want to bring in another pass rusher. Whether they ultimately pursue another edge rusher remains to be seen, but the need for depth at the position could be exposed as the days near the start of the 2025 season.
