What Thunder Fans Should Expect From Premiering Documentaries

October 14, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

OKLAHOMA CITY — The city’s basketball heart is about to relive a golden moment. In a rare stretch of back-to-back features, two major OKC Thunder documentaries will premiere this week. The timing is perfect. Their title defense begins in less than two weeks, but fans will get to reflect on the past before turning to the future.

What Thunder Fans Should Expect From Premiering Documentaries And Who It Benefits

Revisiting a Championship Run

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander gestures to the crowd as the Oklahoma City Thunder celebrate their first NBA Finals title win with a champions parade throughout downtown Oklahoma City on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. The first release, “Loud City,” will air on NBA TV on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 4:30 p.m. CT. Jalen Williams will narrate the film, guiding fans through the team’s maiden NBA championship journey. The second, “Starting 5” Season 2, drops a day later on Netflix. The eight-episode series features Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as one of the five NBA stars at its center.

The streaming giant followed the Thunder all season as they made their historic run. These OKC Thunder documentaries offer fans unprecedented access into the locker room, team huddles, and private moments. One story is told through Williams’ voice, the other through Shai’s lens. Together, they paint a fuller picture of a team that defied expectations.

A Branding Opportunity For a Small Market

There’s an old saying in corporate circles: “Any publicity is good publicity.” For Oklahoma City, good publicity is great business. These documentaries will keep the Thunder in the spotlight long after their trophy parade ended.

For a small-market franchise, visibility matters. A bigger brand means more revenue, and more revenue means the ownership can keep its core intact longer. The NBA’s new CBA comes with hefty tax penalties, but a strong financial position offers flexibility. These OKC Thunder documentaries may not add points to the scoreboard, but they could strengthen the foundation beneath it.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s Star Power Grows

Shai is already one of the league’s best players, but this moment amplifies his reach. On the court, he’s an MVP with a polarizing style. Off the court, he’s calm, thoughtful, and non-controversial. As a Canadian star, he’s also a global face for the league at the perfect time.

More access through these documentaries could supercharge his personal brand. It’s a rare chance for fans to see the person behind the game winner.

Jalen Williams Steps Into the Spotlight

Williams enters his fourth season with an All-NBA Third Team and All-Defensive Second Team nod already to his name. He’s well spoken, steady, and widely respected. Narrating “Loud City” gives him a platform beyond basketball.

He’s positioning himself as a future leader, both on and off the court. The Thunder haven’t had a players association president since Chris Paul. Williams might one day follow that path.

More Than Just Nostalgia

The Thunder’s story isn’t just about one banner. It’s about building something lasting in a small market, where identity and culture matter.

Fans will relive the emotion, the grit, and the magic of a season to remember. But they’ll also see the blueprint of a franchise preparing for sustained greatness.
