The New York Liberty have been hit by another major injury blow. Star guard Sabrina Ionescu was declared injured and out of the Saturday game against the Atlanta Dream. In a season marked by numerous injuries, this is a major setback for Liberty. What led to Sabrina’s injury? What impact will her injury have on the team? Will the Liberty be able to hold on without their star player? Let’s find out.
Sabrina Ionescu Out vs. Dream: Liberty Suffer Major Injury Setback
A Major Injury Setback In-between A Gruelling Campaign
Sabrina Ionescu suffered a left foot injury during the team’s last game against the Chicago Sky on Thursday. While scrambling for a rebound towards the end of the game, Sabrina Ionescu tangled with Sky center Kamilla Cardoso. Cardoso landed heavily on Ionescu’s left foot.
Immediately after the landing, Ionescu appeared fine and unhurt. She was also without a visible brace while attending to the media at the end of the game. She was optimistic that the knock would not prevent her from playing against the Dream. However, she has now been ruled out of that game.
Yesterday, her status for upcoming games was upgraded to questionable. The change in status highlighted the seriousness of the injury. She has now been declared out of the game, and the Liberty will have to cope with their recent loss without their star player on the court.
Sabrina Ionescu is the team’s stat leader, averaging 19.7 points, 5.1 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game. Her imminent absence will significantly impact the team.

Additional Injury Concern for Liberty
The New York Liberty have struggled defensively in the WNBA this season. Injuries to key players have affected the team, and with Ionescu out for this crucial game, pressure continues to mount.
Presently, Isabelle Harrison is out due to concussion protocol. Nyara Sabally is sidelined with a right knee injury. Breanna Stewart is also out due to a right knee injury. As a result, the team will be without key contributors in the frontcourt.
Fans are also concerned about the mounting injury situation. The New York Liberty have not fielded a full roster since their win against the Las Vegas Aces in May. They have been missing key players, and the impact on the team has been obvious.
Surviving In the Absence of Key Players
The Liberty are currently 5th in the WNBA standings with a 22-14 record. Having Ionescu, who recently became the third player in Liberty history to surpass 3,000 career points, could have made a difference for the team. Now that she is out, the team must find a way to return to winning ways.
Fans are hopeful that she will recover in time for the next game, which is Monday against the Connecticut Sun. The team needs to return to winning form. More importantly, coach Sandy Brondello now needs to rotate the team more to reduce player fatigue. Fans are hoping for a quick recovery for Ionescu, as she remains key to the team’s success.
