Two of the biggest names in the NBA will be the two biggest offseason stories amid a summer that many speculate will be one of the craziest off-seasons in recent memory. Giannis Antetokounmpo is currently scouring the landscape for a possible upgrade to the Milwaukee Bucks. However, there is no sure-fire guarantee that a trade will unfold. The same can’t be said for Kevin Durant, as trade rumor after trade rumor continues to hit the headlines while the season winds down with the championship finals underway. While several teams have been linked to Durant since the close of the regular season, such as the Houston Rockets, another Texas franchise has reportedly joined the mix.
Kevin Durant Trade Rumor Connects Star to Spurs
San Antonio Spurs join the Kevin Durant trade rumor mill according to Phoenix Suns insider
Durant remains one of the league’s most attractive superstars alongside Steph Curry and LeBron James. That said, KD’s latest stint with the Phoenix Suns did not go according to plan. The failure in the desert has led to an eventual trade that both Durant and the Suns are reportedly working on. It is only a matter of time, more than anything else, until Durant joins his fifth NBA team.
A handful of teams have shown interest in trading for Durant. It was recently reported out of Phoenix that the San Antonio Spurs are the latest team to be a rumored destination for the two-time champion. According to Suns insider John Gambadoro, the Spurs are heavily expected to be a destination option for Durant, and he may even want to land there.
“So I do know somebody that has been with Kevin Durant recently, recently,” Gambadoro said. “And Kevin Durant and this person talked about the Spurs. And that’s why I mentioned the Spurs. I don’t want to say who, but again, somebody that KD knows and trusts that was talking to KD, mentioned the Spurs.
Gambadoro didn’t say a whole lot there other than the fact that Durant may like the Spurs. Whether this report is 100 percent accurate remains to be seen. Nevertheless, a trade to San Antonio would rock the NBA, not necessarily due to Durant’s role in the move, but who he would be playing with.
Would a Durant and Wemby duo be title worthy?
A knock on Durant’s career in recent years has not had anything to do with his numbers, scoring ability, or his still-existing all-world talent. He may not have had much playoff success. Yet, he’s still putting up outstanding numbers for the age that he is. Since joining Phoenix in 2022, Durant has averaged 25 points per game or higher in each season. He can still score the basket better than most around the league. That is what makes a potential trade to the Spurs an exciting prospect.

Durant, paired with Victor Wembanyama, would be a lightning show. With Wemby as the franchise’s anchor and De’Aaron Fox a more than valuable ball handler, Durant checks all the boxes San Antonio needs to make it work. The sacrifice might come in letting go of Rookie of the Year winner Stephon Castle. That said, for a Durant-Wemby-Fox trio, the Spurs might bite the bullet and let Castle go. Of course, right now, this is more of a sourced rumor than anything with real traction. San Antonio would have to offer a respectable package for Durant, which they can. If Gambadoro’s report is accurate, we could be on the verge of a wild trade in the coming weeks. It has the potential to make San Antonio a contender in the West.
