Chicago Bulls resign Josh Giddey to contract extension

September 9, 2025 by WGN 9

CHICAGO (WGN) — Josh Giddey is going to be a Chicago Bull for the foreseeable future, according to a press release from the team.

The Bulls announced Tuesday that the team re-signed Giddey. Accoding to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the deal is a four-year extension worth $100 million.

Chicago acquired Giddey in a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder on June 21, 2024.

The 22-year-old Australian recorded 1,022 points, 566 rebounds and 503 assists last season, which made him one of three NBA players to reach those numbers, the other two being LeBron James and Nikola Jokic.

Giddey averaged 14.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists and 1.2 steals in 30.2 minutes over 70 games (69 starts) in his debut season with the Bulls. His 8.1 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game were a career best, while his 7.2 assists per game paced Chicago. He also became the second Bulls player ever to average at least 14.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 7.0 assists in a single season. The only other Bulls player who hit those per-game averages was Michael Jordan.

He also recorded personal single-season highs of 30 double-doubles and seven triple-doubles, marking the most double-doubles by a Bulls guard since 1988-89 (Michael Jordan) and the second-most triple-doubles in a season by any position player in Bulls history (Michael Jordan).

Giddey also made a career-high 105 three-pointers, helping Chicago set the team franchise record for three-pointers made (1,271) in a single year.

Over Giddey’s final 30 games of the 2024-25 NBA season, he posted clips of 18.9 points, 9.1 rebounds, 7.8 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.8 blocks while shooting .490 from the field and .436 from three-point range.

Giddey had a 10-game stretch with 220 points, 96 rebounds and 100 assists from Feb. 26 to March 27, becoming one of eight NBA players to tally those minimums over such a span. He joined the likes of Luka Doncic, James Harden, James, Magic Johnson, Jokic, Jordan and Russell Westbrook.

Giddey’s impactful season was also highlighted by historic single-game performances, including becoming the first NBA player with a stat line of 15 points, 10 rebounds, 17 assists and eight steals in a game (at LAL, 3/22). He had two games with at least 20 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists, making him one of two NBA guards last season with as many games (Josh Hart), and he was the only NBA guard with multiple games (3) of 25-plus points and 15-plus rebounds. Giddey’s single-game career high of 19 rebounds (vs. POR, 4/4) was also the most rebounds by a Bulls guard since 1971-72 (Jerry Sloan).

Throughout his four-year NBA career, Giddey has averaged 14.1 points, 7.5 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 0.9 steals in 29.3 minutes across 280 games (279 starts). His career totals of 3,942 points, 2,100 rebounds and 1,703 assists through his first four NBA seasons put him in a group of eight players all-time who have reached those minimums in four years—Larry Bird, Doncic, Grant Hill, James, Johnson, Oscar Robertson and Ben Simmons.

The former No. 6 overall selection in the 2021 NBA Draft earned NBA Rising Stars selections in each of his first two seasons, as well as 2021-22 All-Rookie Second Team honors during his rookie campaign. While with the Thunder, he was named the Western Conference Rookie of the Month four times.
