Brooklyn Nets Still On Giannis Antetokounmpo Watch

June 1, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo has been on the Brooklyn Nets’ radar for a while. Now, a fresh update fuels speculation that he could land in Brooklyn. The buzz around the Nets possibly acquiring Giannis is growing, setting the stage for a blockbuster move that could shake up the league.

Antetokounmpo’s future with the Bucks remains uncertain as he considers his next move. He has spent his entire career with the team, earning nine All-Star selections, two MVP awards, a Defensive Player of the Year title, and a championship over 12 seasons. Rumors suggest he may soon request a trade. Antetokounmpo, 30, averaged 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 6.5 assists during the 2024-25 season. His three-year, $175 million contract extension begins next season.

This week, ESPN reporter Shams Charania said on The Pat McAfee Show that Antetokounmpo has still not decided his future with the Bucks. “Giannis Antetokounmpo is in the process of figuring things out,” Charania said. “I’m told that process is ongoing, and he hasn’t had that meeting with the Bucks yet.”

Teams Interested In Antetokounmpo

With few teams capable of competing for a trade of this scale, three stand out due to their draft capital and tradable players. Rumors suggest the San Antonio Spurs, Brooklyn Nets, and New York Knicks are among the teams expected to pursue Antetokounmpo.

The Nets hold four picks in this year’s draft, giving them a rare chance to make a blockbuster move. With the Bucks lacking first-round picks for the next few years, Brooklyn could offer both this year’s and future selections, aligning with Milwaukee’s priorities.

Nets Could Possibly Acquire Giannis

Adding Antetokounmpo would likely prompt the Nets to aggressively pursue free-agent talent, capitalizing on their strong salary cap flexibility. He could play alongside forward Cameron Johnson, guard Cam Thomas, and center Nic Claxton, assuming they remain on the roster this summer. Johnson has been a frequent name in trade rumors since the fall. Claxton has also drawn interest from teams seeking a starting center. Meanwhile, Thomas is a restricted free agent.

Milwaukee faces an uncertain future with several players entering free agency. Also, one major setback for Antetokounmpo and the team is Damian Lillard’s Achilles injury, suffered in the first round of the playoffs. He could miss most of next season. Additionally, head coach Doc Rivers’ future remains uncertain.

Adding Antetokounmpo To The Nets Lineup

Antetokounmpo dominates the league with elite offense and defense. His loyalty to the Bucks showed when he led them to a championship. However, since Milwaukee is no longer a contender, leaving may be his best choice. In 2023, he told New York Times reporter Tania Ganguli that winning championships remains his top priority. “But at the end of the day, being a winner, it’s over that goal,” Antetokounmpo said. “Winning a championship comes first. I don’t want to be 20 years on the same team and don’t win another championship.”

If he demands a trade, his new team will prepare a massive package to acquire one of the NBA’s greatest players. Brooklyn has the resources to make it happen. The Nets’ acquisition of Giannis would strengthen their championship hopes and contribute to the growing excitement in basketball in New York City.
