The White Sox are taking a chance on a former All-Star.
According to multiple reports, the club has agreed to terms with pitcher Noah Syndergaard on a minor league contract. The right-hander has reported to the complex in Arizona, according to Sox Machine’s James Fegan.
Syndergaard, 32, most recently played in the majors with the Dodgers and Guardians in 2023. Between the two teams, he posted a 6.50 ERA with a 1.45 WHIP over 18 starts (88.2 innings pitched). Cleveland later released him on August 31 of that season, and he has not appeared in game action since.
During his first two years with the Mets, Syndergaard was viewed as one of the game’s most dominant starters. He finished fourth in Rookie of the Year voting in 2015 and notched his lone All-Star honor in 2016, where he also finished eighth in Cy Young voting and 19th in MVP consideration. Having turned in quality seasons after this peak, Syndergaard’s triple-digit velocity hasn’t returned since he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2020, leading to some of his more recent struggles.
It’s unclear where Syndergaard’s stuff currently stands as he approaches two years out of the game. His camp has been planning on a 2025 return dating back to last summer, hoping that he could regain some of his arm speed in the time off. The White Sox’s plan for him remains to be seen, though it appears that he will spend some time with the staff at Camelback Ranch before receiving his next assignment, which is likely with the Triple-A Charlotte Knights when they view him as game-ready.
