As the Hot Stove continued to swirl with the impending lockout, the White Sox have struck a deal with a back-end bullpen piece. Kendall Graveman will be reportedly joining the South Side in 2022.
Graveman was one of the best relievers in baseball last season, pitching to a 1.77 ERA/3.19 FIP over the course of 56 IP with the Mariners and Astros. He posted this Baseball Savant Scorecard over the course of the season.
Graveman will serve as a back of the bullpen option for Tony La Russa and the White Sox, and the three-year deal confirms his ability to be here for the long haul as a 30-year-old.
This likely has ramifications for Craig Kimbrel as well. A move of this sort for a back of the bullpen arm all but guarantees that Craig Kimbrel will be traded at some point during this offseason. It has been rumored that the Philadelphia Phillies are the strongest suitor for Kimbrel’s services next season.
The White Sox’ back end now sets up as Aaron Bummer, Kendall Graveman, and Liam Hendriks. As we’ve seen throughout the playoffs, good bullpens are a necessity for championship teams.
This is likely the first of many moves for the White Sox this offseason. But it’s certainly a good start.
