UPDATE (9/12): The White Sox announce right-handed pitcher Dan Altavilla has been released.
Before Wednesday’s game against the Rays, the White Sox announced a pair of roster moves:
- Recalled right-handed pitcher Sean Burke from Triple-A Charlotte.
- Designated right-hander Dan Altavilla for assignment.
Burke, 25, makes his return to the majors after prolonged struggles led to a demotion on August 18. The team’s Opening Day starter is the owner of a 4-10 record with a 4.28 ERA over 117.2 innings so far this season. Despite flashes of promise as evidenced by seven quality starts over his first 17 outings, Burke has lasted just 3.1 and 3.2 innings, respectively, over his last two starts. These struggles unfortunately bled into three Triple-A outings with the Knights, where Burke amassed a 7.82 ERA and .333 opponent average across 12.2 innings. He’ll try to turn things around against Tampa Bay tonight.
On the other end of the move, Altavilla is the odd man out after just recently getting reinstated from the 15-day IL on September 5. Coming off his 33rd birthday on Monday, the right-hander has made three appearances since his injury and posted a 3.86 ERA with four strikeouts over 2.1 innings. Altavilla owns a better 2.48 ERA over 29.0 innings overall, though both his strikeout and walk rates are below average, and other underlying stats suggest further regression may be on the way.
If Altavilla clears waivers, which seems likely at this rate, he will have the right to reject an outright assignment to Triple-A Charlotte and elect free agency. While he could provide another MLB team with short-term relief if claimed, Altavilla isn’t postseason eligible since the September 1st deadline has come and gone. It also seems unlikely that the White Sox will retain him for 2026 via arbitration, potentially marking the end of his tenure with the club.
