The White Sox are parting ways with a once highly touted prospect.
The team’s Triple-A affiliate announced the release of outfielder Oscar Colas on Saturday afternoon. It was one of three roster moves for the Charlotte Knights, which also included the release of right-hander Dan Altavilla and the addition of first baseman Andrew Vaughn.
Colas, 26, carried a lot of promise when he signed with the White Sox for $2.7 million in 2022. At the time, the Cuban was regarded as the No. 5 international prospect available on the market according to MLB Pipeline. A short time later, Colas appeared inside Baseball America’s Top 100 prospects ranking, with many inside the organization viewing him as a potential long-term contributor on the team.
“We feel very good with what we were able to accomplish this year,” said Marco Paddy at the time, former White Sox special assistant to the general manager — international operations. “Having the ability to sign two high-level prospects with impact-type tools like Colás and (Erick) Hernández, I would categorize that as a solid year. Colás possesses an aggressive style of play that includes an impressive power bat and arm, as well as the ability to play above-average defense at all three outfield positions.”
Now, both prospects that Paddy once raved about have been released from the organization.
During the 2025 campaign, Colas split time between Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Charlotte. In a combined 29 games between the two stops, he slashed an abysmal .163/.245/.255 with one home run, 12 RBI, and a 41 wRC+. He ends his White Sox tenure having played in just 88 games over two seasons, hitting .223/.271/.309 with five home runs and a .580 OPS.
Time will tell if Colas latches on with another organization. Unfortunately, he joins the growing group of White Sox prospects who never reached their full potential while with the team.
