It appears the White Sox are ready to give multiple new arms a shot this weekend.
According to Chase Ford of MiLB Central, right-handed pitcher Wikelman Gonzalez is getting the call from Triple-A Charlotte. The team’s No. 15 prospect will join Jake Palisch, who is also getting promoted from Double-A Birmingham. As part of the corresponding moves, lefty reliever Cam Booser (left shoulder strain) and starting pitcher Davis Martin (right forearm strain) are headed to the IL. Right-hander Caleb Freeman has also been designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.
Widely regarded as the fourth piece in the deal that sent Garrett Crochet to the Red Sox, Gonzalez is an intriguing yet volatile pitching prospect. Throughout his career, the right-hander has posted both high strikeout totals and high walk rates.
At the time he was acquired, Gonzalez posted a 3.97 ERA over 392.1 innings thrown in five minor league seasons for Boston. He spent most of the 2024 season as a starting pitcher in Double-A, though the righty has worked mainly out of the bullpen for Charlotte this season. He currently owns a 2.75 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 19.2 Triple-A innings pitched.
With Booser headed to the injured list, Gonzalez figures to assume his role in the bullpen. That leaves Palisch as the likely placeholder for Martin in the rotation.
