The White Sox are once again shuffling around their pitching staff, as they announced on Thursday morning that they will be promoting RHP Owen White to the majors from the Triple-A Charlotte Knights. In a corresponding move, relief pitcher Caleb Freeman has been sent back down to Charlotte.
White, 25, was a 2nd round pick of the Texas Rangers back in 2018. He was very highly regarded as a prospect through his first few seasons in their organization, being ranked as high as 62nd in MLB Pipeline’s top 100 prospects list. He made his MLB debut in 2023 with the club, but he also yielded underwhelming results and struggled at the Triple-A level that year. Those struggles continued last season, and he was ultimately DFA’d back in December. He was acquired by the Reds, who also DFA’d him less than a month later, and was claimed by the Yankees. That was also short-lived, as the Yankees DFA’d him just a week later before being claimed by the White Sox.
This season, White got off to a strong start but has battled command issues lately. He currently has a 5.24 ERA with the Knights while yielding a high walk rate and a below-average strikeout rate.
Freeman, who was just promoted back to the White Sox on Tuesday, will rejoin the Charlotte Knights after pitching a shutout inning against Detroit on Wednesday. The outing lowered his MLB ERA to 5.40 through 3.1 innings.
