The Dash and Ballers deliver while Knights fall in late-inning thriller

Buffalo Bisons 10, Charlotte Knights 9 (Statcast box)
There were a few roster moves in Charlotte prior to tonight’s contest.

ROSTER MOVES: Prior to the start of this evening’s game at Buffalo, the Charlotte Knights have made the following roster moves:

– P Peyton Pallette sent from Birmingham to Charlotte
– C Juan Gonzalez activated from the Development List
– C Korey Lee reinstated to the White Sox…

As for the game, it was a back-and-forth affair between the Knights (25-27) and the Bisons, with Buffalo ultimately walking it off with a 10-9 victory.

The Knights wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first. Brooks Baldwin led off with a double, and after a ground out by Colson Montgomery, Andrew Vaughn plated Baldwin with a ground out of his own.

However, the Bisons quickly answered against Jesse Scholtens, who was making a rehab start in his long climb back from Tommy John surgery in 2024. Scholtens was roughed up in the first inning, surrendering three runs on five hits.

Charlotte responded with a four-spot in the top of the second, highlighted by doubles from Baldwin and Kyle Teel, to reclaim the lead. The seesaw continued as Buffalo tied the game with a two-run blast off Scholtens in the third and then took the lead in the fourth, courtesy of three walks and a hit-by-pitch.

The Bisons extended their lead to 7-5 in the top of the sixth off of newly-promoted reliever Peyton Pallette. The 24-year-old, who had been closing for the Barons, got a true taste of Triple-A ball. He allowed one run on two hits, a walk, and a wild pitch in his Knights debut, striking out two over 1 2⁄3 innings.

Just when it looked like the Knights were down for the count, trailing 9-6, they mounted a valiant comeback in the top of the ninth. Tristan Gray blasted a solo jack, and Vaughn followed with a two-run shot to tie the game. Unfortunately for Charlotte, Justin Anderson loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, and the Bisons capitalized with a walk-off single to seal the win.

Winston-Salem Dash 4, Hub City Spartanburgers 2
The Winston-Salem Dash (16-30) orchestrated a dramatic ninth-inning comeback to defeat the Hub City Spartanburgers.

Hub City broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth, scratching across a run against Dash starter Lucas Gordon. Following a brief rain delay, the Spartanburgers extended their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh.

Hub City pitching had largely silenced the Dash offense, limiting them to just two hits through the first eight frames. However, the top of the ninth proved to be a different story.

Samuel Zavala ignited the rally with a leadoff walk. After an out, back-to-back singles from Cole McConnell and Jeral Pérez plated Zavala, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Consecutive walks to Braden Montgomery and Matt Hogan then forced in the tying run, knotting the score at 2-2. Catcher Jackson Appel continued the offensive outburst with a clutch single, driving in two runs and giving the Dash a 4-2 lead.

Mark McLaughlin took the mound in the bottom of the ninth and retired the side in order, securing his third save of the season and sealing the win.

Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 3, Charleston RiverDogs 0
The Cannon Ballers (26-20) secured a win over the RiverDogs, largely thanks to the killer offense of Caleb Bonemer and some lights-out pitching. Bonemer wasted no time making an impact, launching an oppo taco in the top of the first inning to give the Ballers an early 1-0 lead. He continued his productive day at the plate in the third, driving in two more runs with a single to extend the Cannon Ballers advantage to 3-0. Chicago selected the 19-year-old in Round 2 (No. 43) of the 2024 draft. The shortstop has been terrific this season for Kanny, slashing .298/.434/.511 with a .945 OPS.

On the mound, the Ballers pitching staff was stellar, as starter Ricardo Brizuela combined with relievers Wardquelin Vasquez, Gabriel Rodríguez, Jack Young and Liam Paddack to deliver a masterful performance, silencing Charleston’s bats with nine scoreless frames.

ACL Rangers 4, ACL White Sox 3 (7 innings) (Tuesday)
This was a back-and-forth affair, but ultimately a rough fourth inning from Yohemy Nolasco (three hits, two earned runs) did the Complex Sox in. ACL White Sox pitching coach Rob Hardy was ejected from this game — there aren’t many ejections in Arizona! — suggests there may have been some ball-and-strike shenanigans from home plate ump Christian Miranda. We’ll slap a light asterisk on Nolasco’s struggles this time out.

And on offense, well, the Complex Sox were lucky to get three tallies, what with 13 strikeouts against one walk over this shortened, seven-inning game. Chicago sinks to 7-10 with this loss, so let’s just fast-forward to next game, Thursday.

ACL Royals 10, ACL White Sox 7 (Monday)
The ACL White Sox (7-9) fell in a high-scoring affair at Camelback Ranch. The Royals jumped out to an early lead, plating six in the first inning, five of those runs off starter Tommy Sheehan, highlighted by a three-run tank from Manuel German.

The White Sox chipped away at the deficit with a two-run third inning, including an RBI single from T.J. McCants and back-to-back solo jacks in the fourth from Grant Magill and Leandro Alsinois. Still, the Royals extended their lead further in the fifth and seventh innings with additional bombs from Jhonayker Ugarte and Roni Cabrera. Despite a late rally in the ninth frame, where Adrian Gil doubled in two, the White Sox ultimately fell short.
