Late-inning collapses plague Knights & Cannon Ballers; Dash & Barons bats silenced. ACL Sox with the only affiliate victory

Toledo Mud Hens 4, Charlotte Knights 3 (Statcast box)
The Charlotte Knights (36-40) fell to the Toledo Mud Hens in a nail-biter despite a strong start from their pitching staff. Colson Montgomery got the Knights on the board in the third with an RBI single, driving in Bryan Ramos. Charlotte’s offense then went quiet until the top of the ninth when Korey Lee singled to lead off the inning. He later scored on a two-run homer by pinch-hitter Andre Lipcius, giving the Knights a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.

On a rehab assignment, Charlotte starter Jonathan Cannon was a highlight on the mound, delivering three scoreless frames to kick off the contest. He was followed by a quartet of bullpen arms — Fraser Ellard, Gus Vargas, Caleb Freeman, and Jairo Iriarte — who continued to stifle Toledo’s offense for four more innings. The shutout bid ended in the eighth when Garrett Schoenle served up the Mud Hens’ first tally. The bottom of the ninth proved to be the Knights’ undoing; Justin Anderson entered with a 3-1 lead but allowed Toledo to rally for three runs, blowing the save and earning the L.

Knoxville Smokies 2, Birmingham Barons 0
The Birmingham Barons (38-32) managed only two hits throughout the entire contest. DJ Gladney notched a single in the second inning, while William Bergolla provided a double in the ninth, representing the Barons’ only extra-base hit. Despite working four walks, Birmingham could not capitalize on any scoring opportunities, going 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. Their best chance came in the ninth inning when they put runners on second and third with no one out, but couldn’t bring them home.

The Barons put forth a commendable effort on the pitching side, keeping the game tight despite the offensive struggles. Starter Tanner McDougal held the Smokies scoreless through three innings before yielding a solo jack in the bottom of the fourth, which accounted for Knoxville’s first run. Relievers Mark McLaughlin and Jordan Mikel combined to pitch effectively, maintaining the one-run deficit until the bottom of the eighth when the Smokies added an insurance run off Andrew Dalquist. The Barons’ pitching staff collectively limited the Smokies to just two runs and kept Birmingham within striking distance until the final out.

Tanner McDougal took the ball for the #Barons, and pitched well enough to win. There was no offensive support, and BHam drops the game 2-0. McDougal goes 5 and allows 1R on 3H and 2BB. His lone run was on a solo HR. He strikes out 5 on 47/78. He takes a hard luck L, and is 0-1. pic.twitter.com/xwxz6I6Lzi

Greensboro Grasshoppers 6, Winston-Salem Dash 2
The Winston-Salem Dash (27-42) faced a tough night on the mound, as starting pitcher Manuel Veloz struggled from the first pitch, surrendering three blasts and five runs overall in just two innings of work, putting the Dash in a quick deficit. Despite the early struggles, the pitching staff showed resilience later in the game. Vince Vannelle and Nick Altermatt held the Grasshoppers scoreless for three and two frames, respectively.

Offensively, the Dash highlight came in the sixth inning when Braden Montgomery launched a two-run dinger, bringing the score to 5-2, but that would be all the tallies mustered for WS. Alec Makarewicz had a three-bagger in the fifth, and Wilber Sanchez went 2-for-4 with a single, a walk, and a double. Jeral Perez added a double in the eighth, but unfortunately, they couldn’t knit together the knocks to overcome the early deficit.

Fredericksburg Nationals 10, Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 9
The Kannapolis Cannon Ballers’ (32-38) bats were hot early against the Fredericksburg Nationals, exploding for nine runs in what looked at one point to be an easy victory. They plated two in the first courtesy of a Ronny Hernandez sac fly and a Javier Mogollón RBI single. In the second inning, T.J. McCants executed a clutch three-run double that cleared the bases. Ryan Burrowes then added to the lead in the third with a two-run tank, and Nathan Archer continued the long-ball barrage with a solo shot in the sixth, giving Kanny a comfortable 8-3 advantage. The Ballers also demonstrated solid plate discipline, working seven walks and generating twelve hits.

However, Kanny’s pitching couldn’t hold the lead, especially in a disastrous bottom of the eighth inning. Holding on to a 9-5 lead heading into the frame, reliever Kevin Davis struggled to find his command, allowing the FredNats to score four times. He allowed four hits, a walk, and two crucial stolen bases, including a daring steal of home. The late-game troubles ultimately cost the Ballers the win, culminating in a walk-off single in the ninth that sealed the 10-9 defeat.

ACL White Sox 5, ACL Rockies 1 (Tuesday, 7 innings)
Despite ACL White Sox (21-17) starter Mathias LaCombe’s early wildness, which allowed an unearned run in the first, the offense quickly responded. An error by the Rockies’ second baseman in the bottom of the frame allowed the first Sox run to score, tying the game. In the third, Mason Dinesen reached on a single and advanced on a throwing error, setting up Drake Logan’s RBI single for the lead. Stiven Flores then added another RBI single to bump the score 3-1.

The Sox pitching staff then took control. Garrett Wright relieved LaCombe in the fourth and tossed two scoreless innings, and Wardquelin Vasquez followed suit in the sixth and seventh. The decisive moment came in the bottom of the sixth when Albertson Asigen crushed a two-run homer to center for the Sox, extending their lead to 5-1, which would be more than enough to secure the win.

ACL Mariners 7, ACL White Sox 6 (Monday)
Offensively, the ACL Sox struggled to find their rhythm early, managing only a single run through the first six innings despite getting several runners on base. In the bottom of the third, Albertson Asigen led off with a two-bagger. After Alexander Albertus moved him to third on a grounder, Stiven Flores plated him with a ground out, cutting the deficit to 3-1, Mariners.

However, the Sox bats came alive dramatically in the bottom of the seventh when Adrian Gil crushed a three-run blast to left, knotting the game at 4-4. They continued their comeback in the eighth, with Mason Dinesen doubling home D’Angelo Tejada to tie the score again at 5-5.

On the mound, Denny Lima made the start and allowed four runs on eight hits with two walks and three Ks over five innings. The bullpen held the Mariners there until Jake Curtis took over in the eighth. He surrendered one tally in that frame and then two more in the ninth, which ended up being the game-winning runs for the M’s. Alvaro Rios drove in a run with a double in the final frame, but ultimately the Sox’s late rally fell short.
