The South Side organization split the day, with the Knights and Dash earning the wins on Father’s Day
Charlotte Knights 6, Durham Bulls 3 (Statcast Box)
Charlotte (33-36) had allowed the Bulls (39-30) to take an early lead off of starting pitcher Tyler Schweitzer, but the Knights fought back and earned all of those runs back and then some to beat Durham, 6-3, and break up a four-game losing streak. Tim Elko had blasted a solo homer in the top of the first to set a positive tone for the game, but the Bulls were able to take the lead after three runs were scored off of Schweitzer in the bottom half of the inning.

Those three runs were the only scored off of Schweitzer in his four innings, but this outing didn’t add to his rough start this month. He has a amassed a 12.19 ERA in his three starts this month across 10 1⁄3 innings, and has struck out the same amount of batters as he’s walked (nine). The good news, however, is that he didn’t flounder today and was better than his last two starts.
In Schweitzer’s absence, the bullpen gave up just one hit, and Jairo Iriarte ended up receiving credit for the win after 1 2⁄3 innings where he allowed just two walks and struck out two.
The Knights had taken the lead in the top of the fifth after a three-run rally that began with Korey Lee driving a run on a throwing error and ended with a two-run single from Nick Maton.

Elko capped off the game with his third hit of the day and drove in the sixth and final run in the top of the ninth to add an insurance run. Out for the ninth was Penn Murfee, and he earned his first save of the season and sealed the victory for the Knights.
Montgomery Biscuits 2, Birmingham Barons 1
The Barons (32-30) had their chance to snap the losing streak, but the offense was non-existent and went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and the bullpen blew the one-run lead in the eighth to drop the series and their fifth in a row to the Biscuits (34-29).
Birmingham had racked up seven hits and out-hit Montgomery by one, but the lone run was scored on a bases loaded fielder’s choice from Ryan Galanie in the top of the third. Outside of that, the Barons pitching staff was left to fend for themselves as there wasn’t much support from the offense. It was a shame, as lefthander Shane Murphy had a great six-inning start and gave up just three hits and struck out five. Murphy has been excellent in 49 innings with the Barons and is sitting at a 1.29 ERA.

The bullpen wasn’t able to hold down the lead, however, as Eric Adler blew the save and earned the loss after giving up the tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Winston-Salem Dash 4, Bowling Green Hot Rods 1
The Dash (24-39) scored early but were able to find a better outcome than the Barons, defeating the Hot Rods (33-29), 4-1, to split the series at three apiece. Winston-Salem’s offense exploded for 13 hits compared to Bowling Green’s five, and five Dash hitters posted multi-hit games — including Alex Makarewicz who also blasted a solo homer in the eighth.

Samuel Zavala was also one of those batters, and he’s been on a heater over the past two weeks. He’s been slashing .422/.460/.622 alongside a 1.082 OPS with three homers and nine RBIs. Thankfully that energy was contagious across the lineup Sunday.
Though the offense only scored four runs, it was plenty for the Dash pitchers to work with. Jake Bockenstedt threw for five efficient scoreless innings to start the game, and the bullpen gave up just one run on three hits to close it out, and Mark McLaughlin snagged his fourth save of the season.
Columbia Fireflies 3, Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 2
The Cannon Ballers (32-31) rounded up their fourth straight loss and fumbled the series to the Fireflies (34-29). Kanny’s offense out-hit Columbia’s 6-3, but it went just 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left eight on base. Ronny Hernández was the only Cannon Baller with two hits, but it was George Wolkow and Nathan Archer who racked up the RBIs — including a fourth-inning blast for Wolkow.

Kaleb Sophy made the 3 1⁄3-inning start but allowed one run each in the first, third, and fourth that gave Columbia the lead. Wardquelin Vasquez and Jonathan Clark were excellent out of the Kanny bullpen, but the offense wasn’t able to pull through behind them.
