South Siders drop the finale of this three game set in Colorado, plus a mid-game All-Star selection?
After a back-and-forth game, the Chicago White Sox dropped the series finale against the Colorado Rockies, 6-4.
The Rockies got on the board quick in the bottom of the first inning against Shane Smith, as Mickey Moniak clubbed a leadoff home run to right center. The team added on in the bottom of the second inning as a dreaded leadoff walk to Ryan McMahon came around to score after a single and fielder’s choice RBI by Yanquiel Fernández brought him around.
The South Siders finally fired back off of Rockies starter Chase Dollander, thanks to a mix of good offense by the White Sox, and some good luck. Edgar Quero started the inning with a leadoff walk, Mike Tauchman singled and Chase Meidroth doubled to score a run. Meidroth’s double started as a should-be double-play grounder, but the ball bounced off of second base instead:
Andrew Benintendi tied the game with a sacrifice fly before the inning ended:
Another leadoff walk started off the top of the fourth inning thanks to Colson Montgomery, and Brooks Baldwin “singled” on a pop up in the infield to put runners on first and second:

That’s so 2024 Chicago White Sox.
Even though Quero lined out into a double play (a bad break to offset Meidroth’s double), Tauchman delivered with two outs to bring around Baldwin, as the team took a 3-2 lead. Now that’s a way to take advantage of another team’s mistakes.
Dollander would be replaced after the RBI due to a high pitch count, as he went 3 2⁄3 innings with five hits, three runs, four walks, and two strikeouts. Zach Agnos took over on the mound, pitching into the top of the fifth inning with a, you guessed it, leadoff walk to Benintendi. Lenyn Sosa singled with one-out, to bring up Montgomery with runners on first and second.
Montgomery came up big with the RBI single to extend the lead to 4-2, as he continues to have a stellar opening series in the big leagues. He has collected five hits in his first three MLB games.
The Rockies fired back in the bottom of the fifth inning as Fernández and Ryan Ritter had back-to-back singles to start the inning. Moniak continued his solid day at the plate with a two-run RBI triple. Cycle watch?
That would be the end of the road for Smith, as he went 4 1⁄3 IP with five hits, five earned runs, two walks, and two strikeouts. His ERA went up to 4.20 following the outing. Surely nothing crazy would happen to him within the next few half-innings, right?
Never say never, as Smith was announced to represent the team in the 2025 All-Star game mid-inning!

Congratulations to the pitcher on a great start to the season, and now his first All-Star selection. Although he has been struggling more recently, the beginning to his career with the White Sox has been nothing short of impressive.
He is just the second Rule 5 draft pick to make the All-Star Game in their season after selection. The only other was Dan Uggla in 2006. He is also the first rookie pitcher in White Sox history to be named to the All-Star team.

It’s always nice to have a feel-good story on your team, and this is just that. Oh wait, there was a game going on still, right?
Dan Altavilla replaced Smith on the mound in a tie game, inheriting Moniak at third base, Moniak was thrown out at home thanks to a solid play by Montgomery at third on a grounder from Thairo Estrada, but he still reached first on the play. Then, Michael Toglia’s two-run home run would be the difference in this one, as the Rockies took a 6-4 lead.
Following this big hit, it seemed like the offense just died for both teams. Both teams used a handful of relievers, and the White Sox were unable to get anything going across the last three innings. Seth Halvorsen came in for the save in the top of the ninth inning, and did just that, as a Meidroth two-out walk was the only action we saw from the offense. Benintendi ended the game with a fly out, and the Rockies were able to salvage their 21st win of the season.
The White Sox will have a quick turnaround from worst to first starting tomorrow at Rate Field, as they fly home to take on the new leaders of the AL East, the Toronto Blue Jays. Sean Burke will be on the mound against familiar face/White Sox killer José Berríos. Come on out to the ballpark to see the highly-anticipated home debut for Montgomery at 6:40 p.m. CT.
