White Sox claim former top catching prospect Drew Romo off waivers

In case you missed it last week, the White Sox claimed catcher Drew Romo off waivers from the Mets. To make room on the 40-man roster, infielder Ben Cowles was designated for assignment.

Romo spent the 2025 season in the Colorado organization, where he started on the IL with a fractured right hand. Once healthy in late May, the 24-year-old went on to hit a combined .258/.323/.394 with 11 doubles, seven home runs, and 24 RBI over 65 games between Triple-A Albuquerque and the Arizona Complex League Rockies (injury rehab). Romo also appeared in three major-league games for the Rockies, going 0-for-3 in his brief stint.

Drafted in the first round (35th overall) in the 2020 MLB Draft, the former top prospect has been on the move quite a bit this offseason already. He was originally claimed off waivers by the Orioles on December 5, leaving the Colorado organization for the first time, and then claimed by the Mets on December 17. If he ends up sticking with the White Sox come regular season, Romo figures to serve as a minor league depth piece, with several options remaining, behind the trio of Edgar Quero, Kyle Teel, and Korey Lee.

On the flip side of this move, Cowles finds himself DFA’d after joining the White Sox organization on September 3. The 25-year-old combined to hit .235/.300/.371 with nine home runs, 49 RBI, and 18 stolen bases over 128 games between Triple-A Iowa (Cubs) and Triple-A Charlotte (White Sox) last year.

After the transactions, the White Sox 40-man roster remains at 40.
