We have now hit the deadline for teams to add prospects eligible for the Rule 5 Draft to their 40-man roster, and the White Sox have ensured that a couple of their prospects will remain in the system. The Sox have announced that they are selecting the contracts of pitching prospects Tanner McDougal and Duncan Davitt. Additionally, they announced that they have placed Fraser Ellard on the Voluntary Retired List.

Tanner McDougal, the White Sox’s 7th-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline, was drafted in the 5th round of the 2021 MLB Draft. He was lauded for the elite spin rates he showcased at the inaugural MLB Draft Combine, but suffered a UCL tear and was forced to miss the entire 2022 season. He flashed his talent in 2023 and 2024, but inconsistent command held him back from reaching his potential. He finally put it all together in 2025, keeping his BB/9 rate below 4 on the season and holding a 3.26 ERA through 113.1 innings split between High-A and Double-A, while striking out 136 batters in the process. He could potentially begin the 2026 season in the Triple-A Charlotte rotation, with an MLB promotion at some point in the season becoming a real possibility.

Duncan Davitt was originally selected in the 18th round of the 2022 MLB Draft. Acquired along with INF Curtis Mead and RHP Ben Peoples in the trade that sent Adrian Houser to the Tampa Bay Rays, Davitt pitched to a 4.38 ERA across 28 starts between Double-A and Triple-A in 2025, while striking out 150 batters in 152 innings. He has been held in high regard by scouts for his excellent command, although he is seen as a likely back-end of the rotation starter.

With the addition of just two prospects to their 40-man roster, several notable White Sox prospects are now eligible to be drafted by other teams through the Rule 5 Draft. Prospects of note who could be selected are Mason Adams (#13 White Sox prospect), Peyton Pallette, (#14 prospect), Tyler Schweitzer (#29 prospect), and Shane Murphy. All four pitchers have seen action at the Triple-A level and could be candidates to stick on another team’s 26-man roster if selected in December.

For a prospect to be eligible to be selected in the Rule 5 Draft, they must have exceeded a certain amount of time after signing with an MLB organization before being added to that club’s 40-man roster. If a player was signed when they were 18 years old or younger, they must be added to the roster within 5 years. If the player in question was signed at 19 years old or older, then they only have 4 years to be added to the roster.

Following Tuesday’s transactions, the White Sox’s 40-man roster increases to 36.
