The clock is ticking for the New York Yankees as they grind out the last bits of September towards the postseason. The club is falling behind in the divisional race. That being said, preparing their go-to pitchers, Luis Gil and Max Fried, is crucial.
Two Yankees Pitchers That Will Strongly Be Relied on in the 2025 Postseason
Needless to say, the current positioning for the Yankees postseason berth looks to be the wild card situation. Every Yankees loss and Blue Jays win sets the Bronx bombers a full game back.
A lot could happen in the next two weeks pertaining to postseason baseball. Whether that’s the Yankees taking over possession of the American League East, solidifying a spot in the Wild Card race, or simply playing themselves out of a postseason run.
If it’s the first two possibilities, the club will need to determine their top two starting pitchers. Why two? They’ll need to secure the first two games quickly in a divisional series, or they’d need to win two games in the wild card series.
Currently, Gil and Fried are the go-to names when it comes to dominance, reliability, matchups, and proven success.
Max Fried Has Been the Boss on the Bump in the Bronx and Could be the Postseason Answer
It is without a doubt that Fried has been the most dominant man in pinstripes to pitch this season. The offseason acquisition, Fried, currently has a 17-5 win-loss record. He has a WAR of 3.6, ERA of 3.03, and leads the league in wins.
The left-hander has recorded 181.1 innings of work, allowing only 14 home runs and 61 earned runs on 157 hits. Fried’s presence on the mound for the Yankees gives the team the best chance to win.
He brings quality and competitiveness as well as depth, with a healthy offering of innings. Fried’s run prevention and consistency easily has him being the most trusted arm on the staff.
Collectively, Fried’s numbers against both the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox are quite impressive. This in conjunction with his 2025 performance speaks volumes. The Yankees will play an AL East team regardless of how they make the postseason.
Gil Will Play Huge Rotational Role in the Postseason
Luis Gil is slowly getting back to what he was as a starting pitcher. Returning late this season from injury, Gil only has eight starts. He does hold a .800 win-loss percentage, going 4-1 so far in his compressed season.
The reigning Rookie of the Year is showing the league why he had that title last year. Yes, Carlos Rodon has proven to be up there in 2025 performance, however his postseason reliability is frail. Gil is a solid option.
Gil has also dominated AL East competition, with workable numbers against the Blue Jays and Red Sox. His career numbers against the Red Sox are 2-1 in five starts, a 0.99 ERA, striking out 26 hitters in 27 and 1 / 3 innings.
His start against the Red Sox this season on September 12 displayed a six no-hit inning outing, keeping them scoreless.
Also in September, Gil faced the Blue Jays, throwing six innings, allowing one run. His line was extravagant, but he held his own with his repertoire.
Gil will be a huge come backer in the postseason. His reliability is known, and his capabilities are proven. Gil and Fried will be the guys to lean on for the Yankees.
