On this date (Aug. 12) in 1990, the stubborn rain defeated the White Sox and the even-more stubborn Texas Rangers.
The teams endured a seven-and-a-half hour rain delay at Comiskey Park before the game was postponed. It was the final game of a soggy weekend series that was stretched to four games because of a May rain out.
The (unofficially) longest rain delay in history was set in motion by showers that started at 11 a.m.
First pitch was scheduled for 1:35 p.m. but the tarp never left the field and the game was mercifully called off at approximately 9 p.m.
Because this was Texas’ last trip to Chicago, the teams waited and waited and waited and … . According to reports of the day, Texas voted unanimously not to return to Chicago on an upcoming mutual scheduled off day.
The game was rescheduled as part of a contentious doubleheader six days later in Texas.
