
Here’s a look at what transpired on this date (July 16th) in White Sox history:
*1904, SMITH THAT’S IT!: Frank Smith fired a six-hitter and fanned six as the White Sox stopped a six-game skid with a 3-0 win at Washington. The Sox took the lead for good in the first when Fielder Jones led off the game with a double and eventually scored on George Davis’ single.
*1906, SOX HIT-AND-RUN BY NEW YORK: The future World Series champion White Sox parlayed a hit-and-run play executed by George Davis and Jiggs Donahue into a 7-4 win in 10 innings in New York. After the play, Davis scored on George Rohe’s infield hit to give the Sox the lead for good.
*1907, SOX BEAT NY, THE STINK: With a thick stench from the nearby stockyards threatening to halt the game, the Sox beat New York 3-2 in the 13th on Frank Isbell’s two-run single. Shaking off rheumatism, Isbell entered the game in the ninth in leading the Sox to their sixth win in seven games.
*1908, LET’S BE FRANK, SOX WIN: Frank Isbell’s two-run in-the-park homer and Nick Altrock’s four-hit pitching were enough to subdue the Red Sox 2-0 in Boston. Isbell’s blast came in the fourth and also scored Fielder Jones. Altrock allowed four singles and fanned one in the 98-minute affair.
*1911, BIG FINISH: Nixey Callahan’s walkoff single capped the White Sox four-run ninth in a 6-5 win over Washington before 16,175 at Comiskey Park. Callahan’s hit came a batter after Harry Lord drove in the tying run.
*1915, THANKS, BIG ED!: Ed Walsh celebrated “Ed Walsh Day” with a complete game victory in the White Sox 6-2 win over Philadelphia before 28,000 adoring fans at Comiskey Park. Making his first start of the season, Walsh gave up six hits and fanned five after a pregame ceremony in which he was showered with gifts.
*1920, SIGNFICANT SWEEP: Red Faber bested Walter Johnson in he first game and “Shoeless” Joe Jackson celebrated his birthday with an in-the-park homer in the nightcap as the White Sox swept a twinbill in Washington. The Sox won the first game 4-1 and Faber halted Sam Rice’s hitting streak at 28 games. In the nightcap, Jackson’s “inside slam” was just the third in team annals.
*1922, YAM IT UP: Catcher Yam Yaryan’s first career homer got the White Sox the lead for good in a 4-0 win over Babe Ruth and the Yankees in New York. Yaryan was on the receiving of Red Faber’s three-hitter as the Sox improved to 44-40.
*1927, HEY SARGE! The White Sox rode 6.1 innings of shutout relief by Sarge Connally to a 7-5 win over Washington at Comiskey Park. Willie Kamm’s run-scoring single in the seventh – his third RBI of the game – put Connally in position for his eighth win.
*1928, DYNAMIC DH DUO: Willie Kamm and Bill Cissell, the Sox left side of the infield, combined to go 10-for-15 with six RBI in a doubleheader sweep at Boston. The Sox won the opener 4-0 and took the nightcap 9-1 in their second consecutive doubleheader sweep in Boston.
*1929, ART THE GREAT: Art “The Great” Shires extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a walkoff single in the 10th in the White Sox 6-5 win over Washington at Comiskey Park. Tommy Thomas earned the win in relief with 1.2 scoreless innings of relief. Thomas escaped a bases-loaded one-out jam in the ninth after entering with a 2-0 count.
*1939, GEE WHAT A SWEEP!: Gee Walker went 4-for-4 with a run and three RBI as the White Sox capped a doubleheader sweep with a 6-3 Game 2 win over Washington at Comiskey Park. In the opener, Walker drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth in a 3-2 victory.
*1948, !CIAO: Marino Pieretti, the only native of Italy to play for the White Sox, went eight innings for the victory in the White Sox 3-2 win at Washington. A native of Lucca, Italy, Pieretti gave up two runs on six hits with four strikeouts for his third win.
*1951, BIG DAY FOR DON: Alton, Ill., native Don Lenhardt fell a triple shy of the cycle and drove in four in the White Sox 9-5 win over the A’s at Comiskey Park. Lenhardt hit a two-run homer in the fifth as the Sox pulled to within a game of first place Boston.
*1953, BILLY PIERCE … WITH THE WALKOFF! Reliever Billy Pierce’s walkoff single in the 10th lifted the White Sox to a 6-5 win in the first game of a doubleheader sweep of Washington at Comiskey Park. In the nightcap, Bud Stewart’s two-run homer in the eighth got the Sox a 5-4 sweep-completing win.
*1955, LOTSA PITCHERS: The White Sox and Orioles set a big league record by using seven pitches in an inning in the ninth of Sox 4-3 win at Comiskey Park. Dixie Howell, the last of the nine pitchers used in the inning earned the victory. Howell earned a win for the second consecutive game, marking the first time a Sox pitcher accomplished that feat since Clint Brown did it on Aug 11. and Aug. 12, 1940.
*1961, MINNIE FOR THE WINNIE: Minnie Minoso’s two-run, two-out bases-loaded single in the ninth handed the White Sox a 4-3 walkoff win over the Red Sox in the first game of a doubhleheader at Comiskey Park. Minoso’s single scored Sammy Esposito and Luis Aparicio, who drove in a run earlier in the inning.
*1971, D.C. FINALE VS. SENATORS: Tommy John fired a five-hitter and Bill Melton hit a two-run homer as the White Sox won their final game in Washington against the Senators 2-0 at RFK Stadium. The next time the Sox would play in DC would be in an interleague game against the Nationals on June 18, 2010.
*1974, SOX WIN IN A HURRY: Jim Kaat tossed a two-hitter in the White Sox 6-0 win over Detroit in 1:45 before 14,876 at Comiskey Park. Brian Downing, Dick Allen and Bill Melton all homered off Mickey Lolich as Kaat improved to 10-6.
*1976, FAREWELL, HANK: Hank Aaron made his last appearance at Comiskey Park in the White Sox 5-2 win over Milwaukee before 16,791 at Comiskey Park. Dave Hamilton got “Hammerin’ Hank,” who was pinch-hitting for Mike Hegan, looking to end the eighth. For the record, Aaron was 8-for-32 with no homers at Comiskey Park.
*1985, SOX STARS: Carlton Fisk started behind the plate and Harold Baines hit safely in his first career All-Star at bat in the Mid-Summer Classic at Minnesota. Baines, making the first of his four All-Star appearances in a Sox uniform, singled as a pinch-hitter for Jimmy Key in the third inning. Fisk went 0-for-2 as a replacement for Detroit’s Lance Parrish, who was voted in by the fans but was scratched because of an injury. The Nationals won the game 6-1.
*1988, FRED MANRIQUE, MY MAIN MANRIQUE!: Fred Manrique doubled and drove in three runs in the White Sox 7-4 win at Yankee Stadium. Steve Lyons and Greg Walker homered in support of Melido Perez, who pitched into the seventh inning for his ninth win.
*1989, BEATING THE BREW: Richard Dotson, Donn Pall and Bobby Thigpen combined on a two-hit shutout in the White Sox 2-0 win over Milwaukee at Comiskey Park. Dotson no-hit the Brewers for five innings before Robin Yount singled. Ivan Calderon drove in one run and the other scored on an error as the Southsiders won their fourth straight since the All-Star break.
*1992, THE BELL TOLLS: George Bell’s single with two out in the 12th scored Tim Raines to cap the Sox 5-4 come-from-behind victory over Milwaukee at Comiskey Park. The Sox trailed 3-1 with two outs in the ninth but a Carlton Fisk single, a Steve Sax double and a Lance Johnson single tied the game. The Sox fell behind again in the 10th but a Raines single and steal and a Frank Thomas single evened the score again setting the stage for the 12th.
*1996, METRODOME MASHING: Robin Ventura homered twice and Harold Baines, Dave Martinez and Ray Durham each went deep once as the White Sox pounded the Twins 11-2 at the Metrodome. Wilson Alvarez fanned a career-high 12 over seven innings for the victory.
*2000, DOMINANT ORDONEZ: Magglio Ordonez went 4-for-4 with two homers (including a grand slam) as the White Sox whipped the Milwaukee Brewers 11-5 before 30,050 at Comiskey Park. Ordonez’s grand slam, the third of his career, broke open a tight game in the sixth inning. James Baldwin earned his 12th victory by fanning a career-high 11 batters in eight innings. Mark Buehrle pitched the ninth in making his big league debut.
*2002, MAGNIFICENT MAGGS: Magglio Ordonez’s second homer of the game – a solo shot in the ninth – was the difference in the White Sox 5-4 win at Cleveland. Damaso Marte retired the final two batters with the tying run on second for his second save.
*2005, BIG-TIME BUEHRLE: Mark Buehrle gave up two runs on three hits in seven innings for his 11th victory in the first-place White Sox 7-5 win at Cleveland. Buehrle fanned six and got support from A.J. Pierzynski who had two RBI as the Sox built a 6-0 lead after 4½ innings.
*2007, MACKOWIAK ATTACK: Rob Mackowiak’s two-run double – his second hit of the inning — capped a nine-run sixth in the White Sox 11-10 win at Cleveland. Paul Konerko hit a three-run homer in the frame, which included nine hits.
*2011, ACTION JACKSON: Edwin Jackson tossed a nine-hitter in the White Sox 5-0 win at Detroit. Jackson only had two 1-2-3 innings while fanning two for his sixth win. Carlos Quentin’s homer in the second fronted the Sox for good.
*2013, SALE THE WINNER: White Sox representative Chris Sale pitched two perfect innings for the win in the American League’s 3-0 triumph in the All-Star Game at Citi Field in New York. Sale struck out two in joining Mark Buehrle, James Baldwin, Jack McDowell, Ray Herbert, Early Wynn and Eddie Smith as Sox pitchers to win an All-Star Game.
*2023, SERIES WIN: Luis Robert Jr. had four hits, including a homer, and three RBI as the Sox won in Atlanta 8-1. Dylan Cease gave up one run in five innings for his fourth win in the series-clinching triumph.
*2024, ALL-STAR CROCHET: Sox rep Garrett Crochet tossed a scoreless fourth inning with a strikeout of Teoscar Hernandez in the American League’s 5-3 win in the All-Star Game in Texas.
