My @soxnerd style alphabetical nugget(s)-a-day review of the 2022 White Sox continues with a look at DANNY MENDICK
*Utilityman slashed .289/.343/.433 in a season cut short to 31 games because of an injury. The average and on-base outputs were career-bests. He was granted free agency in November and signed with the Mets.
*Mendick played every position but first and catcher in his career with the Sox. He played second, short, third and left in 2022 and handled 94 chances without an error.
*Mendick slashed .360/.385/.560 in 26 plate appearances vs. lefties in 2022
*Mendick’s average of .417 in late and close situations — plate appearances in the 7th or later with the batting team tied, ahead by one, or the tying run at least on deck — was the highest by a Sox player (minimum 25 plate appearances) since Pablo Ozuna’s .482 in 2006
*Mendick hit .338 in medium and high leverage situations in 2006
*Mendick hit .800 (4-for-5) in extra-innings, which tied for the fifth highest season output (minimum four at bats) in Sox history (since 1952)
*Mendick’s career average of .500 (6-for-12) in the first inning is third in Sox history among players with at least 12 at bats in the frame. He ranks behind Ross Gload, who hit .577 in the first from 2004 to 2006, and Kevan Smith, who hit .526 in the first from 2017 to 2018 (minimum 12 at bats).
