The White Sox will welcome back an old friend this weekend.
Jake Burger, now a member of the Texas Rangers, is set to return to Rate Field for the first time since being traded on August 1, 2023. However, this won’t be the first time he’s faced his former team, as he notably hit a walk-off home run against the White Sox last season.
On-field performances aside, Jake has made headlines off the field over the past several months. He and his wife, Ashlyn, welcomed their daughter, Penelope, to the world on October 25, 2024. They discovered before her birth that Penelope had Down syndrome and have since chosen to share her diagnosis by using their platform.
In an interview with People magazine, Ashlyn opened up about their daughter.
“We chose to be public about it because we were really proud of our diagnosis, and we wanted to share our story, and share it on such a public stage because we want people that don’t live their life on a public stage to also be proud of their child.”
“When they get that diagnosis, it’s really daunting. It’s scary, and so I feel like we’ve just been really honored and humbled that we were the chosen ones. And so I think it’s really, it was no coincidence that God chose us to be that representative, and they gave us the platform of Jake’s ability to play baseball for it.”
As part of their mission to not only spread awareness but also help families in similar situations, the Burgers launched their own non-profit, The Burger Family Foundation.
“Inspired by our daughter Penelope and the powerful symbolism of the extra 21st chromosome, our foundation is dedicated to creating opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome and their families. Through direct financial assistance, therapy, community, and the healing power of ranch life, we’re building spaces that foster hope, purpose, and belonging.”
With Jake’s return to Chicago, Ashlyn announced a fundraiser for their foundation on Monday. With a target goal of $3,500 in mind entering the weekend, White Sox fans stepped up to help contribute towards this amount. As a reward for those who donated, one lucky winner was randomly selected to join the Burgers at a game this weekend. This inspired our team at Sox On 35th to pitch in while also having some fun.
Given Jake’s lasting impact on the city and fanbase, we are proud to announce donations of $100 for every hit, and an extra $35 for every home run that Jake records in this weekend’s series (May 23-25). In addition, we kindly ask all White Sox fans who are willing and able to also consider giving to this great cause.
