September Schedule Holds High Importance for Yankees Postseason Run

August 24, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

The New York Yankees are grinding away, attempting to make their schedule in September meaningful. The club has gone through a roller coaster of a season, from being top of the division, to now fighting for relevance.

The Bronx Bombers went from a feared group in the American League East to a wounded, downward-spiraling club. The defense is error-prone, the offense is inconsistent, and the pitching is hit or miss.

Aaron Boone and his club have not taken advantage of their schedule so far this season. Despite being dominant early in 2025, the AL East slowly slipped away at the hands of the surging Toronto Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays currently lead the season series against the Yankees, going 7-3. Toronto has taken the lead of the division and is running away with it, with two teams trailing at a good pace.

Where the Yankees Went Wrong So Far This Season

If the Yankees wanted to gain any ground in their divisional race, their August campaign did not help to start. They kicked off their August schedule with the Miami Marlins, in a three-game set, and suffered a sweep.

This was the Marlins’ first-ever sweep of the Yankees, and this was devastating for New York and its fans. The struggling Marlins should have been a free lunch for the Yankees. The next series was another loss, as they dropped two of three games against the Texas Rangers, and split the series against the Houston Astros. The Yankees also split their series with the Minnesota Twins. The momentum then turned in the right direction, sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals and taking two wins from the Tampa Bay Rays.

A huge series is currently ongoing against the original division rivals, the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees have dropped the first three so far against Boston, falling behind them for second in the AL East. The Red Sox and Yankees are both in the running for Wild Card spots, as well as chasing the Blue Jays for the top of the division.

The September Schedule is Crucial for the Bronx Bombers

In baseball, September is a month of relevance, redemption, rebound, and/or finale. That month’s schedule will be extremely interesting based on the current standings.

The Yankees will start off the month against the Astros, who currently sit at the top of the American League West. Following this match-up will be the season series finale against the Blue Jays.

The Yankees currently sit 6 1/2 games behind Toronto in the division. They are still within reach, and one good winning spree puts them neck and neck. They will play three games in the Bronx with hopes of gaining ground.

The Detroit Tigers are also at the top of their division, and will face the Yankees in a three-game set in the Bronx. Followed by this match-up, the Yankees will dance once again with their original division rivals, the Red Sox.

This series has extreme relevance due to the fight within the AL East and the AL Wild Card race. Three AL East teams will be relevant in September. To finish off the year, they’ll see the Twins and Baltimore Orioles on the road, followed by the Chicago White Sox and the Orioles in the Bronx.

The September schedule is set up for a rising or a burial for the Yankees. Despite their recent struggles, their cards are still lined up to make good things happen.
