Schumaker Ready to Take Texas Rangers to Next Level

October 13, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

It only seemed like a matter of time until Skip Schumaker was named manager of the Texas Rangers.

The rumors were already circulating when he joined the front office before the season started, and they only got louder when Bruce Bochy and the Rangers announced that they were mutually parting ways after the season ended. It only took four days for the Rangers to name Schumaker as Bochy’s successor and the 21st manager in franchise history. The Rangers showed further faith in him by inking him to a four-year extension, tying him to Arlington through the 2029 season.

Skip Schumaker Takes the Helm as New Texas Rangers Manager

In his introductory press conference this week, Schumaker said working in the front office helped him understand how the team operates, what they expect, and how general manager Chris Young works. “I quickly learned the passion that CY has for winning and doing whatever he can to make this a first-class organization.”

Young emphasized that the team wanted a manager who could help with the development of young players.

Schumaker fits that mold.

His last gig was as the manager of the Miami Marlins, where he earned National League Manager of the Year in his first year as he guided them to a 84-78 record and a playoff appearance in 2023. Before that, he served as the bench coach for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2022 as well as the associate manager (2020-2021) and first base coach (2018-2019) for the San Diego Padres.

CAPE: Building a Championship Culture

Schumaker follows an acronym to establish a winning culture, which is CAPE. It stands for Communication, Alignment, Preparation, and Execution. He said that it gets in that order, and the team cannot expect to win without it.

Schumaker acknowledged that the Rangers are talented and lined with All-Stars like Corey Seager, Nathan Eovaldi, and Jacob deGrom, among others. He also said that his goal is to take the Rangers back to the promised land, and he didn’t come back to not win.
