Ronny Mauricio’s Red Hot Rehab: When Will He Be MLB-Ready Again?

May 28, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

The New York Mets have yet another young infielder loaded with potential on the cusp of being called up to the big leagues—but it wouldn’t be his first time there. Ronny Mauricio, the former No. 1 prospect in the Mets organization in 2020, is looking to make an impact in the major leagues again.

Ronny Mauricio Hoping to Make Major League Impact Again Soon

Mauricio has limited major league experience. He received his first at-bats back in 2023 when the Mets shipped away most of their roster to make way for a new era. Mauricio got the call on Sept. 1 of that year, learning that he would be playing alongside Francisco Lindor.

In 26 games, Mauricio stepped up to the plate 103 times, tallying 25 hits and two home runs, with a .296 on-base percentage. He was on track for a 2024 roster spot until a major setback struck.

Mauricio wanted to continue playing baseball at a high level during the offseason, gearing up for winter ball in the Dominican Winter League. According to a report by Mike Puma of the New York Post, the Mets urged him not to play. When he declined, they hoped he would at least wait until January. He did neither. In December 2023, Mauricio tore the ACL in his right knee, sidelining him for the rest of the offseason and the entirety of the 2024 season.

The Journey Back to Success

Fast forward to 2025: Mauricio is back, rehabbing with the Triple-A Syracuse Mets and looking better than ever. Although the 24-year-old has played in just five games, he’s gone 10-for-18, with two home runs, six RBI, and a staggering 1.516 OPS. The performance earned him Triple-A Player of the Week.

Mets fans have seen this small sample size and already want to see more of his pure hitting on the major league roster.

Unfortunately, they will have to wait a bit longer. In a press conference last week, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns discussed the team’s No. 9 prospect’s rehab status and emphasized the importance of patience.

“He’s a player who has options,” Stearns said. “So he’s going to stay in the minor leagues until we have a need.”

Stearns also noted that Mauricio will continue to play all over the infield while in the minors. This includes reps at shortstop, second base, and third base. What also works in the Mets’ favor is the fact that the utility man can play the outfield.

The Mets are currently without outfielders Jose Siri and Jesse Winker, who have yet to ramp up baseball activities. Given Mauricio’s versatility, the team can use that flexibility to their advantage at any point this season.
