The post Report: White Sox plan to trade Aaron Civale before deadline appeared first on Sox On 35th.
To little surprise, the White Sox’s newest acquisition likely won’t be with the team for long.
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports that the club will look to move starting pitcher Aaron Civale at the trade deadline for prospects. The Brewers recently dealt Civale, along with cash considerations, to the South Siders in exchange for first baseman Andrew Vaughn.
The Chicago White Sox were thrilled getting veteran starter Aaron Civale from the Milwaukee Brewers for first baseman Andrew Vaughn, who had been demoted to the minors a month ago.
Still, they won’t have Civale in uniform long.
They plan to trade him at the July 31 deadline, believing they could get at least a couple of mid-tier prospects in return.
Civale, 30, has spent the 2025 season in Milwaukee until recently requesting a trade after losing his spot in their starting rotation. In 22 innings with the Brewers so far, he owns a 1-2 record with a 4.91 ERA across five starts. Civale’s opportunity to get back into the starting rotation now seems relatively unimpeded with the White Sox, as Jonathan Cannon is currently on the injured list with a lower-back strain. This move prevents the White Sox from needing to rush Cannon back while also adding a more experienced rental to eat some innings.
Civale, who is set to become a free agent at the season’s end, posted a 3.77 ERA across 76 starts with Cleveland from 2019-2023, but has struggled after a series of recent trades. The right-hander was shipped to Tampa Bay mid-way through the 2023 season in exchange for highly-touted prospect Kyle Manzardo. Civale carried a 5.17 ERA over 27 starts, and his hits per nine innings rose to 9.8.
Tampa later moved the right-hander to the Brewers the following year, where his numbers saw an immediate improvement. Civale rocked a 3.53 ERA during his 14 starts with Milwaukee last season and made an appearance in the Wild Card Series, firing three shutout innings in the Brewers’ Game 1 loss.
This year, Civale has done a good job of limiting hard contact. His average exit velocity of 87.1 mph ranks in the 88th percentile of pitchers this season, and his hard-hit percentage (34.8) is in the 81st percentile. However, the veteran has found little success elsewhere in his game.
His addition provides the Sox with much-needed innings, even if it’s only for a month. The team has seen bulk relievers like Tyler Alexander and Owen White get action out of a bullpen that already included multi-inning pitchers like Mike Vasil, Jared Shuster, and the recently DFA’d Bryse Wilson.
The thin starting pitching depth in Triple-A, where only Mike Clevinger and the struggling Tyler Schweitzer remain as true starters, likely contributed to the team’s decision to target Civale. GM Chris Getz has even hinted at the idea of a six-man rotation to the Chicago Sun-Times’ Kyle Williams to alleviate the stress on some of the less experienced arms.
Both the White Sox and Civale will look to maximize his value in late July to ship him off to a contender while getting “a couple of mid-tier prospects” in return, like the two sides wish. Time will tell how his market takes shape.
