Could another Japanese star be headed to the South Side?
A new report from Yahoo! Japan has listed the White Sox as a possible landing spot for pitcher Tatsuya Imai after the shocking signing of slugger Munetaka Murakami. While it’s unclear how strong the connection truly is, the report describes Chicago as being “among the leading contenders” and an “obvious choice.”
“With the negotiation deadline approaching … powerhouses like the Yankees and Phillies are considered leading contenders, but the White Sox, seeking to rebuild their team, have suddenly emerged as the obvious choice. Following the acquisition of infielder Munetaka Murakami (25), a major comeback from a ‘longshot’ is becoming a reality.”
Despite their reported interest, MLB.com’s Brian Murphy and Mark Feinsand seemed to downplay the White Sox’s chances by calling them a “longshot” to land Imai. Other teams reportedly in the mix include the Yankees, Mets, Cubs, Phillies, and Orioles.
Imai, 27, has established himself as one of Japan’s top pitchers over the past several seasons. He is coming off a dominant 2025 campaign in which he posted a 1.92 ERA with 178 strikeouts and a career-low 7% walk rate across 163.2 innings. Improved command has helped contribute to his rise, as Imai owns an NPB-best 27% strikeout rate since the start of the 2024 season.
Although it’s difficult to gauge exactly where the White Sox stand in these sweepstakes, this is the sort of opportunity Chris Getz and Co. should remain heavily involved in. If Imai’s market for a longer-term deal doesn’t shape up the way agent Scott Boras is hoping, a door could be left open once again. Limited financial commitments in the coming years could allow the South Siders to pull off the improbable, but expectations should be tempered as the likelihood appears much lower.
Imai has until Friday at 4:00 p.m. CT to sign, though a decision could come sooner. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide any updates.
