Report: Mariners Prospect Cole Young Set to Join Big-League Club This Weekend

May 31, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners are calling up their No. 3 prospect, Cole Young, to the majors, a source confirmed to Daniel Kramer of MLB.com. The 21-year-old infielder will join the big-league club this weekend, marking a significant step for the organization’s top position player prospect.

Report: Mariners to Call Up Prospect Cole Young

Young, a Pittsburgh native, was selected by the Mariners in the first round (21st overall) of the 2022 MLB Draft out of Wexford, PA. He’s climbed steadily through the minors, showcasing a polished bat and defensive versatility. This month at Triple-A Tacoma, Young has been a standout, slashing .370/.466/.680 with a 1.146 OPS across 118 plate appearances. He leads all Triple-A players with 37 hits since May 1, including five homers, 10 doubles, and 20 RBI, per MiLB.com stats.

Praise From the Front Office

Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto gave an interview on May 30, just hours before the reported call-up. “Nothing,” Dipoto told reporters when asked what Young still needed to prove. “He’s showing us everything we need to see. It’s about timing now.”

Expectations for Young are sky-high. MLB Pipeline ranks him as the No. 42 overall prospect, drawing comparisons to former All-Star second baseman Dustin Pedroia for his compact frame (5-foot-10, 180 pounds), high contact rate, and scrappy play. Scouts praise his advanced approach at the plate, noting a 12.5% walk rate in Triple-A this year, paired with a knack for spraying line drives to all fields. “He’s hitting rockets. It’s pole-to-pole. He’s barreling everything, he’s not striking out, he’s taking his walks,” Dipoto told MLB.com’s Daniel Kramer.

The Mariners, who blew a lead in Friday’s game in the ninth, hope Young can provide a spark at second base following Ryan Bliss‘s season-ending injury. With Seattle at the forefront of the AL West race, Young’s arrival is a game-changer. His debut will be this weekend, although the team has yet to announce an official roster move.
