The Philadelphia Phillies have a corresponding move dilemma, as Alec Bohm is set to be activated off the injured list. Bohm has been on the injured list with left shoulder inflammation, the second time he’s been on the IL this season. Trea Turner and Edmundo Sosa are also on the injured list at the moment. This has left the Phillies in a tough position regarding their infield depth. The team has added Donovan Walton and Rafael Lantigua to both the 28-man and 40-man rosters to give them extra depth. Currently, the Phillies have a full 40-man roster. A corresponding 40-man roster move is not needed to activate Bohm. This is because Bohm is on the 10-day injured list as opposed to the 60-day injured list.

Bohm has a .272/.319/.384 line with nine home runs and 51 RBI in 111 games this season. He also has a 94 wRC+ and a .311 BABIP this year, along with a 0.34 BB/K rate. Since returning from his first stint on the injured list on August 17, Bohm has a .243/.296/.351 line with one home run and nine RBI in 19 games. He has a 78 wRC+, a .298 BABIP, and a 0.30 BB/K rate during that stretch. Heading into the postseason, Bohm needs to get back on track, especially if the Phillies intend to have him bat cleanup in October. This season has been an up-and-down year for Bohm. The two injured list stints have also probably affected his overall numbers.

Importance Of Positional Depth In Certain Areas
The Phillies have to decide what is more important: a third catcher or extra shortstop depth. Since rosters expanded, the Phillies have had Garrett Stubbs on the major league roster as the third catcher. With that being said, Bohm has not played shortstop in a major league game. If the Phillies make a move other than optioning Stubbs, that leaves them thin at the shortstop position until Sosa returns. That is expected to happen on September 23, when he is first eligible to be activated. Keeping Stubbs would leave the Phillies with Walton or Lantigua, as well as Bryson Stott, as their main shortstop options. Weston Wilson and Otto Kemp could probably play shortstop if needed. Stubbs has played in two games in the majors this year with no plate appearances.

Roster Crunch Coming Soon
Additional moves will need to be made when Sosa and Turner return. It is worth noting that Walton has no minor league options. This means he will be designated for assignment when Bohm, Sosa, or Turner returns, unless the Phillies decide to keep him on the major league roster. Lantigua can be optioned to the minor leagues. Even if the Phillies elect to keep Walton, Lantigua, or Stubbs on the major league team when Bohm is activated, that does not guarantee it will stay that way. Wilson and Kemp are competing for bench spots on the postseason roster, and the team should keep both on the major league roster. This would mean Stubbs and Lantigua would be optioned with Walton designated for assignment as the three corresponding moves.
