A resident sustained a minor injury in a house fire on Friday in unincorporated Geneva Township, the Geneva Fire Department said in a news release.
The fire department was dispatched at midnight to a two-story, single-family home near the intersection of Kirk and Hill roads for a report of a structure fire, the news release said.
Upon arrival, fire companies found heavy fire coming from the rear of the home and a second-floor window, according to the release.
All of the home’s occupants had evacuated before fire crews arrived, the department said. One resident, who suffered a minor burn, was evaluated by paramedics and declined further medical attention.
Due to extensive fire, smoke and water damage, the home was declared uninhabitable, according to the department. The preliminary cause of the fire was determined to be “careless use of smoking materials” in a first-floor bedroom, per the release.
Firefighters ultimately brought the fire under control in about one hour, the department said.
Geneva crews received assistance at the scene from firefighters from St. Charles, Batavia, Elburn, West Chicago, Fermilab, North Aurora, South Elgin, Winfield and Carol Stream, per the news release. The Elgin Fire Department and Sugar Grove Fire Protection District provided coverage at Geneva’s fire stations during the fire, and additional support was provided by the Geneva Emergency Management Agency, Kane County Sheriff’s Office, Kane County Office of Emergency Management, Red Cross, ComEd and Nicor Gas, the release said.
