Here’s a look at eventful moments, capped by the game Leury Garcia’s life, in White Sox history on Oct. 10:
*1906, SOX DROP GAME 2: After the White Sox won the opener the day prior, the visiting Cubs prevailed with 7-1 win to pull even in the World Series at chilled South Side Park. The “Hitless Wonder” White Sox ultimately won the series in seven games. In Game 2, the Cubs, who won a record 116 games during the regular season, scored four in the first three innings off Doc White to take command. Ed Reulbach limited the Sox to one hit, a single to center by Jiggs Donahue in the seventh inning. Patsy Dougherty scored the Sox lone run in the fifth with the help of a Cubs’ defensive lapse.
*1909, BALK THE DIFFERENCE: Dave Altizer scored the go-ahead run on a ninth inning balk as the Sox topped the Cubs 2-1 in Game 3 of the annual City Series before 24,034 at the West Side Grounds. Ed Walsh got the win as the Sox pulled to within 2-1 in the best-of-7 series they would eventually lose in five.
*1915, SOX CLAIM CITY CROWN: Eddie Murphy’s go-ahead RBI double ignited a five-run fifth as the White Sox finished off the City Series with an 11-3 Game 5 win over the Cubs before 32,666 at Comiskey Park. Reb Russell got the win as the Sox took the series for the fifth consecutive time.
*1917, WORLD SERIES LOSS IN NYC: Following two wins at Comiskey Park, the eventual champion White Sox dropped Game 3 of the World Series to the Giants 2-0 before 33,616 at the Polo Grounds. Ed Cicotte was the tough-luck loser, giving up just eight hits in eight innings. Buck Weaver and Eddie Collins combined for four of the Sox five hits.
*1921, SOX DISPATCH CUBS … AGAIN: Earl Sheely’s three-run homer was part of a five-run fifth as the White Sox clinched the City Series title for the seventh consecutive time with a 9-5 Game 5 win over the host Cubs. Sheely finished with four RBI took the series for the seventh consecutive time.
*1924, BON VOYAGE!: Charles Comiskey and John McGraw kicked off a second European barnstorming tour. The Old Roman and McGraw took their teams to London, Dublin, Glasgow, Berlin, Paris and Rome.
*1939, SOX, LYONS DEVOUR CUBS: The White Sox and Ted Lyons finished off the Cubs with a 7-1 victory in the decisive game of the annual City Series before 14,781 at Comiskey Park. Lyons, who went 14-6 in the regular season, fired his second five-hitter of the showdown as the Sox took the series for the fifth year in a row and for the 16th time in the last 21 meetings. The Sox were down 3 games to 1 and trailing 5-0 in Game 5 before they staged a huge comeback which culminated with the victory in the final contest.
*1993, ALCS DEFEAT IN TORONTO: Despite a Robin Ventura homer in the ninth, the White Sox fell to the Toronto Blue Jays 5-3 in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series at SkyDome. The Blue Jays took a 3-2 lead in the best-of-7 series in surviving the ninth where the Sox got the tying run to the plate before Duane Ward struck out Bo Jackson to end it. The Blue Jays scored runs each of the first four innings off Jack McDowell to take command.
*2021, THE LEURY GARCIA GAME: Leury Garcia’s three-run homer and Jose Abreu’s go-ahead RBI highlighted the White Sox 12-6 win over Houston in Game 3 of an American League Division Series before a raucous gathering of 40,288 at Guaranteed Rate Field.
The win pulled the Sox to within 2-1 in the best-of-five series which they ultimately dropped in five games.
Garcia’s blast — a 436-foot shot with a 107 mph exit velocity — capped a five-run third and put the Sox on top temporarily 6-5.
Leury Garcia hit his homer off Yimi Garcia who had replaced Astros starter Luis Garcia.
After Houston tied it in the fourth, the Sox took the lead for good on an RBI single by Abreu in the bottom of the frame. The Sox plated two more in the inning on RBIs by Yasmani Grandal and Eloy Jimenez.
The Sox broke it open with three in the eighth on a RBI doubles by Andrew Vaughn and Garcia and a run-scoring single by Tim Anderson.
Michael Kopech, who wasn’t particularly effective (3 runs in 2.1 innings), got the win in relief of starter Dylan Cease, who used 44 stressful pitches to get five outs.
The rest of the bullpen was phenomenal.
Ryan Tepera, Aaron Bummer, Craig Kimbrel and Liam Hendriks combined to retire the last 15 batters to finish off the Sox first home playoff win since Game 3 of the 2008 AL Division Series.
