The post Mike Clevinger among 6 White Sox players to elect free agency appeared first on Sox On 35th.
Since the calendar flipped to October, the following White Sox players have elected free agency:
- Bryse Wilson (RHP) – October 1
- Jacob Amaya (INF) – October 2
- Mike Clevinger (RHP) – October 2
- Josh Palacios (OF) – October 4
- Dominic Fletcher (OF) – October 14
- Corey Julks (OF) – October 14
All six players were among the eligible minor league players to enter the open market at the conclusion of the regular season. Major League free agents, players with six-plus years of big league service time, have to wait until five days after the World Series’ end to announce their decision.
Of the White Sox minor leaguers to depart, the most polarizing was undoubtedly Clevinger. The 34-year-old, whose on-field play has been overshadowed by domestic abuse allegations, spent his third season with the organization.
Returning on a minor league contract, Clevinger was selected to the big-league roster and posted a disastrous 7.94 ERA over 5.1 innings thrown during the early going. He was designated for assignment by the team on April 16, though cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Charlotte, where he posted a 4.20 ERA over 100.2 innings the rest of the way.
Wilson, 27, saw a bit more action on the South Side compared to Clevinger. Making 20 appearances, five of which were starts, the free-agent acquisition struggled mightily before getting DFA’d and stashed away in Triple-A Charlotte by mid-June. The righty finished with a 6.65 ERA and 6.31 FIP over 47.1 innings with the major league team.
Amaya and Palacios joined the two arms in free agency during the first week of the month. Amaya primarily played shortstop in his second season with the team, going 7-for-66 (.106) in 36 games. Palacios, on the other hand, appeared in 51 games, hitting .203/.292/.305 with three homers and nine RBIs. Both served their purpose as placeholders on the major league roster and spent the rest of their time in Charlotte, though injuries limited the 30-year-old Palacios.
The two newest free agents on this list, Fletcher and Julks, were recently part of five roster moves on Tuesday. The pair were outrighted to Triple-A Charlotte to free up room on the 40-man roster, but each refused their minor league assignments and hit the open market with the others. Neither player made significant contributions to the team in 2025 and will look for fresh opportunities over the coming months.
