Mets Starter to Miss Remainder of First Season in Queens with UCL Injury

August 24, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

The New York Mets have announced that starting pitcher Frankie Montas will miss the remainder of the 2025 season with a UCL injury. Montas was placed on the 15-day injured list today (retroactive to August 22), and Mets manager Carlos Mendoza called the injury “pretty significant.”  In a corresponding move, the club has called up relief pitcher Huascar Brazobán.

Frankie Montas Has UCL Injury, Will Miss Remainder of 2025

Montas signed a two-year, $34 million guaranteed contract with the Mets this offseason after splitting time between the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds last season. Still, his first season with the club has been one to forget. He started the season on the IL after suffering a lat strain in spring training and would not debut until June 24th. In 38 2/3 innings in 2025, Montas has pitched to a 6.28 ERA, prompting his move to the bullpen at the beginning of the month.

With the injury described as a “pretty significant” UCL injury, there is reason to believe that Montas may be heading towards Tommy John surgery. If Montas undergoes Tommy John, he will miss the entirety of the 2026 season as well, marking the end of his contract with New York.

The Mets, who currently sit just outside of a Wild Card spot with a 68-60 record, have been one of the worst teams in baseball since the middle of June. The club’s offense has been at the center of its struggles, while its starting pitching has tried its hardest to keep the team afloat. As they look to find a way into the playoffs, they will have to rely on a rotation of Sean Manaea, Kodai Senga, David Peterson, Clay Holmes, and recently promoted prospect Nolan McLean.

As for Brazobán, he will seemingly take Montas’s role in the bullpen. In 44 games in 2025, he owns a 3.83 ERA and a 5-2 record.
