The 2025 MLB Draft will take place on July 13th and 14th in Atlanta, Georgia. With the first round coming up on Sunday, many top prospects are going to be eager to hear their names called. The Chicago Cubs hold the 17th overall pick and will have a big decision to make when it is their turn to draft. Jonathan Mayo from MLB.com predicts that the Cubs will select Arizona outfielder Brendan Summerhill at 17 in his most recent mock draft. Summerhill is currently sitting at 16th on the top 250 draft prospects list. This would be an excellent pick for the Cubs, considering their draft position. Summerhill just finished his junior season with the Wildcats and showed why he deserves to be a first-round pick.

Cubs Projected to Pick Brendan Summerhill in MLB.com Mock Draft
Is Summerhill the Right Guy?
Per usual, the Cubs are mostly focused on college players and “leaning bat” according to Jonathan Mayo. Mayo also says that Summerhill’s bat is the reason they would pick him over a player like Wehiwa Aloy. If the Cubs were considering taking a pitcher, USCB right-hander Tyler Bremner or Arkansas right-hander Gage Wood would be the right choice, according to Mayo. Wood recently threw a 19-strikeout no-hitter in the College World Series marking the first one in 65 years. Shifting the focus back to Brendan Summerhill, what makes him the right choice?

This year, Summerhill proved to be one of the best outfielders in college baseball. Summerhill is a lefty hitter who finished with a slash line of .343/.459/.556. His raw power and amazing eye at the plate are two of the things that led to his OPS of 1.015. He also finished with 11 stolen bases despite missing some time at the beginning of the season with some injuries. In the outfield, he is extremely versatile as he played mostly right field for Arizona this year, but could play anywhere in the outfield at a sufficient level. Overall, Summerhill is an incredibly well-rounded player on the field and at the plate. Just like every college player, he has things to improve on, but he would be a terrific player to develop into a big leaguer for the Cubs.
