How Outfielder’s Hamstring Injury Could Affect the Brewers’ Playoff Run

July 20, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

The Milwaukee Brewers found themselves in the middle of playoff positioning, riding the momentum of a strong first half and the electric play of Sal Frelick, when reality hit hard: their leadoff man and Gold Glove right fielder exited with a hamstring injury during a crucial July series. The timing couldn’t be worse as the National League wild card race tightens with every game.

Sal Frelick’s Injury Could Impact Brewers’ Playoff Hopes

Frelick’s Value

Sal Frelick has been a catalyst for the Brewers all season. He has been especially pivotal for the Brewers’ offensive engine in 2025, hitting .294 with a .758 OPS, 7 home runs, 39 RBI, and over 100 hits before the All-Star break. He excels at the top of the lineup, boasting strong contact ability, on-base skills, and disruptive base running. More than just numbers, Frelick’s presence at the top of the lineup has directly coincided with Milwaukee’s surges this summer, both offensively and defensively.

Frelick’s diagnosis, a Grade I hamstring strain, is relatively mild, often called a “pulled” muscle, and typically results in a player being considered day-to-day. However, Major League Baseball data shows that even mild hamstring strains frequently cost position players one to two weeks and carry a high risk of re-injury if not allowed to fully heal. Frelick was placed on the injured list on Friday, indicating they are wary of rushing him back.

What Will the Brewers Lose Without Frelick?

Frelick’s contact skills and ability to get on base set the tone for the Brewers’ offense. The 2021 draftee has often delivered critical hits in close games, something that a bench bat can’t easily replace. His base running also creates pressure, a dimension lacking from most alternatives.

As a Gold Glover, Frelick covers ground in right field that few can match. Defensive replacements may bring solid gloves, but won’t replicate his closing speed and arm. Brewers players and coaches have cited Frelick as a “key cog in this whole thing.” His absence is not just tactical, but emotional.

The National League is a dogfight. As of today, the Brewers are firmly in playoff contention, eyeing a wild card berth and possibly more. But the margins are razor-thin. At least 15 out of the Brewers’ final 40 games are direct battles with teams within three games of Milwaukee’s record. In a league where one bad week in August can spell disaster, losing Frelick could flip outcomes in those must-win contests. Younger outfielders may be defensively competent but have yet to show Frelick’s consistency at the plate. The Brewers’ recent minor league call-ups have provided some spark, but the lineup is simply more dynamic with Sal at the top.

Looking Forward With, and Without, Frelick

The Brewers’ playoff aspirations hinge on getting Sal Frelick healthy and on the field for the stretch run. A Grade I strain is not season-ending, but history shows even minor hamstring issues can linger if not managed conservatively. The Crew will likely play it cautious with Frelick. They can do this by balancing risk and holding their collective breath as every game gains importance. If Frelick returns at full strength by August, the Brewers’ postseason hopes look solid. If he lingers on the bench, Milwaukee may find itself in a dogfight decided by runs where their leadoff spark plug makes all the difference.
