Giants On a Run: Can They Take Control of NL West?

June 12, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

The San Francisco Giants are on a six-game winning streak. They just finished a sweep of the Atlanta Braves and have won the first two against the Colorado Rockies. They are now only half a game behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and only half a game in front of the San Diego Padres. Can they break away and take sole control of the National League West?

Giants Keep Winning in Tight NL West

The Giants’ Win Streak

Besides the aforementioned win streak, they are also 7-3 in their last 10. The Giants have had a decent lineup with the highlights being Matt Chapman and Jung Hoo Lee. Chapman in particular has a 133 OPS+ while also providing all-world caliber defense at 3rd base. As a result of this, Chapman is leading the team with 2.9 WAR and will most likely be an all-star this year.

However, the real driver behind the win streak has been the pitching. Robbie Ray and Logan Webb have been stellar this year with an ERA+ of 156 and 148 respectively. Both have been lights-out throughout the win streak. Another driver for the team’s success has been the bullpen. It has been led by an excellent triumvirate of Erik Miller, Randy Rodriguez, and Tyler Rogers. All 3 have a WAR above 1.2 and an ERA below 1.50. The particular standout has been Rodriguez, who has an otherworldly 0.61 ERA and 1.6 WAR in 29 1/3 innings. Furthermore, Camilo Doval has reclaimed his position as Giants closer with a 1.45 ERA and 10 saves in 32 appearances. The bullpen has been a significant part of the Giants’ win streak.

Giants Division Rivals

The Giants’ main rivals in this year’s division race are the Dodgers and Padres. Right now, the Giants are half a game behind the Dodgers and half a game in front of the Padres. The Dodgers appear to be flagging right now, as they are 4-6 in their last 10 and their rotation is plagued by a huge amount of injuries. They’re still the Dodgers, the reigning champs and evil empire of the NL, so you can’t count them out. However, right now, the Dodgers look like they will be losing their 1st place spot very soon to either the Giants or Padres.

As for the Padres, they are on something of a hot streak of their own. They’re 6-4 in their last 10. Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. have been amazing this year and will most likely both be all-stars this year. Right now, both the Padres and the Giants look like they could surpass the Dodgers and fight for sole control of the NL West. Perhaps both teams will make the playoffs, with one in the division leader spot and the other in the wild card. It’s too early in the season to predict that. But, right now, it looks like the Giants and Padres are going to be fighting for the NL West all season long.

The Last Word

The Giants have been in a transition phase recently. They have only made the postseason once in the last eight years, that being the miracle 2021 season where they won 107 games. However, it looks like the Giants are back to their early-2010s winning ways. They have built a pretty good rotation and bullpen to carry the team, along with an above-average lineup. They have a bunch of stars on the team. Only time will tell, but the future looks bright for the Giants and it starts with taking control of the NL West soon.
