Davis Martin makes his first start since June 12 with the goal of extending the win streak to five games
The White Sox (36-65) have come out of the All-Star break HOT, and have won all four games by at least five runs, including the first game of the series with the Tampa Bay Rays (52-49) yesterday. They still have last place in the AL Central locked down, 24 games behind the Detroit Tigers, but at least they have finally approached “fun bad”. Look at this team making history two years in a row:

Davis Martin will take the mound and make his return with the big league club tonight — sending Wikelman Gonzalez back down to the Knights as the corresponding move.
Prior to tonight’s game at Tampa Bay, the Chicago White Sox returned right-handed pitcher Davis Martin from his injury rehabilitation assignment at Class AAA Charlotte, reinstated him from the 15-day injured list and optioned right-hander Wikelman González to Charlotte.

Davis worked through two rehab starts with the Knights, totaling 5 2⁄3 innings of work. With just a small sample size, they weren’t his best starts as he gave up three runs across those innings, reaching a 4.76 ERA for those contests, but he struck out five in his most recent outing as he settled in more post-injury.
Martin has been solid overall this season and has posted a 3.79 ERA and a 1.227 WHIP, and 53 strikeouts, across 80 2⁄3 innings. He will have to deal with power hitters such as Jonathan Aranda and Yandy Díaz, which could be a tough match if the offense isn’t providing run support. Aranda holds the fifth-best batting average (.316) and third-best OBP (.394) in all of baseball, and Díaz ranks 15th in batting average (.293) and tied for sixth in hits with 112.

Righthander Drew Rasmussen is making his 20th start of the season, and has been a lock this year on the mound, posting a 2.86 ERA and a 1.029 WHIP across 91 1⁄3 frames. Rasmussen has struck out 77 batters this season at a 23.3% strikeout rate, which could be a battle for a team that strikes out a decent amount.
Luis Robert Jr. has finally picked it up offensively, and he’s slashing .364/.447/.576 with a 1.023 OPS over his last 10 games (33 at-bats), potentially putting himself higher with regards to trade talks. Miguel Vargas has also hit a home run in his last two games, and is slugging .545 over the past two weeks.

The game time has been moved up to 6:05 p.m. CT due to potential bad weather on the East Coast. Catch the action as usual on CHSN to see if Dan Plesac will actually have to wash his shirt, or tune in to the radio broadcast at ESPN Chicago AM 1000. Let’s get five in a row!
