The White Sox have lost one of their own.
Former outfielder Chet Lemon has passed away at the age of 70. The team announced the unfortunate news and expressed their condolences in a social media post on Thursday.
Lemon, who began his career on the South Side, played in 785 games over seven seasons for the club from 1975-81. During that stretch, he slashed .288/.363/.451 with 73 homers and 348 RBI. His best campaigns with Chicago came in 1978-79, when he notched All-Star game honors in each.
Following 1981, Lemon was traded to the Tigers, where he played the rest of his career from 1982-1990. He was named an All-Star once more in 1984 and helped lead Detroit to its fourth and most recent World Series title.
In the spring of 1990, Lemon was diagnosed with polycythemia vera, a rare blood disorder that led to complications throughout the remainder of his life. The year would also mark his last in Major League Baseball, as he finished his 16-year career hitting .273/.355/.442 with 215 home runs over 1,988 games.
On behalf of our entire Sox On 35th, we send our condolences to Mr. Lemon’s friends and family.
