All eyes are on one of the White Sox’s top prospects after an apparent injury.
Charlotte Knights shortstop Colson Montgomery exited Friday night’s game after taking an 87 mph pitch off his right knee in the third inning. Montgomery appeared to be in considerable pain as he fell to the ground, though the severity of his injury is not currently known.
Montgomery, 23, has recently found success at the dish after working in Arizona with Ryan Fuller, the organization’s Director of Hitting. Though the White Sox’s No. 6 prospect entered tonight’s game hitting .193/.274/.329 with a 56 wRC+ on the season, Montgomery’s hot stretch paints a much different picture. The highly touted infielder has slashed .280/.368/.520 since his return to Charlotte on May 13th, with six doubles, two homers, seven RBI, and an .888 OPS in 13 games.
This season figures to be an important one for Montgomery after his 2024 campaign was arguably the most underwhelming of his minor league career. Having spent the entire season with the Knights at just 22 years old, he was one of the younger players at the level, so there is still reason to believe he can continue his bounce-back as long as he puts up more consistent results offensively.
Hopefully, Montgomery’s Friday night exit was precautionary, and he can take the field again soon. More information should be made available at the end of tonight’s game.
