The Rockies are currently 9-48. They just keep losing over and over again. The fans are losing hope. Chants of “Sell the Team” are common to hear ringing through Coors Field. Is there any way this team can be saved?
Rockies Go on 6-Game Losing Streak
Rockies Season Over Already
The Rockies have lost 6 games in a row. They’re 1-9 in their last 10 games. Through 1/3rd of the season, they still only have single-digit wins. They are on pace for a -513-run differential, which would be by far the worst ever since 1901. The current record for worst ever is -348, which the 1932 Boston Red Sox set. Somehow, they have a chance of beating the 2024 White Sox record for most losses ever. They only have one player who has accumulated more than 1 WAR, while most teams have 4 or 5. This current iteration of the Rockies could very well be the worst team ever assembled, which is highly unlikely.
Rockies Have Been Bad for Years
Unfortunately, the Rockies haven’t made the playoffs since before the pandemic. They have lost over 100 in the last two years. They have made the playoffs exactly twice in the previous 15 years, and it seems unlikely they will be going to the playoffs this year. The future doesn’t look bright. Their big free agent acquisition post-pandemic, who was supposed to lead the Rockies into a new era for the franchise, was Kris Bryant. Bryant has been a total bust, accumulating a ghastly -1.5 WAR in 4 years with the Rockies. Their franchise ace is Kyle Freeland, who is currently 0-8 with -0.5 WAR. Their free agent over the summer was Angels castoff Mickey Moniak, who is rocking a -0.8 WAR with the Rockies this season. It’s safe to say their talent acquisition has been truly awful for years now.
The Rebuild
Typically, with teams like the White Sox, Marlins, or Pirates, they lose because their management fails to invest in the team. They just run the team to profit off of revenue sharing. That is not the case with the Rockies. They are ranked 21st in revenue this year and have typically been above 20th every year. They’re not the Dodgers or the Yankees, but team ownership does invest in the Rockies. They are just really, really bad at choosing how to spend that money.
The team is currently completely gutted. They have no trade assets on the roster. Fixing the team would require a year-long rebuild, which they currently lack the personnel to undertake. It would also require a completely new team philosophy on talent development and talent acquisition. Until then, the Rockies will keep losing. The attendance is always there, and the support is always there for the team. It’s just that the team isn’t there for the fans.
