Report: Rafael Devers Traded After Controversial Start to Season
It’s a shocking trade for both Boston and San Francisco, as the Giants add one of the game’s premier designated hitters as they look to compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers atop the National League West. After sweeping their division rivals, the New York Yankees, the Red Sox send their franchise cornerstone to the National League after one of the more controversial beginnings to a season in recent memory.
Devers, 28, has had a season riddled with controversy. The three-time All-Star got off to a nightmarish start to the season, and later refused to play both first and third base despite being asked by the Red Sox ownership multiple times.

After adding Alex Bregman in the offseason, Devers stated his desire to be the club’s everyday third baseman, but ended up losing the job to Bregman. After starting the season on a 0-for-19 streak, Devers settled into the DH role. He is currently hitting .271 with 14 home runs and 57 RBI this season.
When Triston Casas went down with a torn patellar tendon in early May, the Sox asked Devers to come back to the infield, this time as a first baseman. Devers refused, telling the media that “they can’t expect me to play every single position out there.” The club instead chose Abraham Toro and Romy Gonzalez to play first, while Devers continued to DH until they traded him today.
Giants Acquire Rafael Devers, Send Hicks, Harrison, and More to Boston
The Giants are sending starting pitchers Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison to Boston along with their No. 4 prospect James Tibbs III and prospect Jose Bello. Devers will seemingly slot into the Giants’ DH role, as they have one of the best defensive third basemen in the game in Matt Chapman. Currently sitting second in the NL West at 41-30, Devers will add firepower to a lineup looking to make it to the playoffs for the first time since 2021.
For the Red Sox, Hicks and Harrison will slot into a rotation with Garrett Crochet, Brayan Bello, and Walker Buehler. The Sox currently sit fourth in the AL East at 37-36, but are only a half-game out of the wild card race, despite it still being somewhat early in the season.
