The post Braden Montgomery suffers small fracture in foot, out for season appeared first on Sox On 35th.
The Birmingham Barons will be without the White Sox’s top prospect for the rest of the regular season and Southern League postseason.
It was revealed on Tuesday that outfielder Braden Montgomery has been placed on the IL with a small fracture in his right foot. The injury occurred during his first plate appearance on Saturday, where he was hit by Chattanooga’s Julian Garcia in the second inning. Montgomery didn’t immediately leave the game as he was caught stealing later that same frame, but eventually was pinch-hit for by Jacob Burke in the top of the fourth.
Though the injury will now cut his season short by a couple of weeks, Montgomery impressed at all stops in his first full campaign with the organization. Acquired as the co-headliner in the Garrett Crochet trade, Montgomery posted a 150 wRC+ with Low-A Kannapolis and a 134 wRC+ with High-A Winston-Salem. His surface numbers were equally impressive to begin his stint at the Double-A level, although his BABIP was unsustainably high, and his strikeout numbers began to jump following the promotion.
The former Texas A&M aggie ends his 2025 season with the Barons, hitting .272/.364/.416 with one home run, 11 RBI, and a .780 OPS over 34 Double-A games. Still, at a level that is always a tough test for hitters due to more advanced competition and pitcher-friendly conditions, Montgomery’s debut season shouldn’t be viewed as anything less than a massive success.
He ends with a cumulative .270/.360/.444 slash line along with 12 home runs, 34 doubles, 14 stolen bases, and 68 RBI over 121 total games. The outfielder should continue to develop as a hitter as he’s already showing a patient approach, and will eventually be able to tap into his plus raw power consistently.
While Montgomery has played plenty of center field this year, he still profiles best as the long-term solution in right field for the White Sox. Assuming he continues on his current track, the top prospect will likely make his MLB debut at some point next season.
We will continue to monitor Montgomery’s recovery as the White Sox still expect him to be ready in time for the Arizona Fall League. Follow us on social media @SoxOn35th and @PipelineTo35th for more!
