The post Andrew Vaughn surprisingly optioned to Charlotte among four roster moves appeared first on Sox On 35th.
A large section of the fan base has been asking for a change at first base. Today, they got one.
The White Sox announced today that both Andrew Vaughn and Tim Elko were optioned to Triple-A Charlotte to accommodate the returns of veteran outfielders Mike Tauchman and Andrew Benintendi.
Vaughn, the 27-year-old former first baseman, has failed to blossom since a respectable rookie season, and was struggling mightily at the plate this year to the tune of a .531 OPS. Elko, who many expected to overtake Vaughn for the first base job this season, has slugged three homers in ten 2025 games but has struck out 31% of the time and recorded just a .188 OBP. Neither had a worthwhile claim to the position based on their latest contributions, so Getz and the team decided to use some of their positional versatility with players who have been contributing recently with the impending rehab completions of the aforementioned outfield duo.
Interestingly, no outfielder was demoted, but rather both of the current major league first basemen. Manager Will Venable will likely field Miguel Vargas, Lenyn Sosa, or Matt Thaiss at first base moving forward.
Meanwhile, Benintendi and Tauchman expect to significantly boost the South Siders’ offensive production. The former slugged five bombs and notched a .698 OPS in 24 games before missing the last month with a calf injury, while Tauchman has been out since April 10 after playing in just three games between consecutive hamstring strains. A native of suburban Chicago, Tauchman was inked this prior offseason to a one-year deal worth $1.95 million.
