The White Sox slow the Phillies with a 6-2 win
During the seventh inning of tonight’s game, it was announced that Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg had passed away. Regardless of which team you root for, Sandberg was a pillar of Chicago sports and a great player, as well as a genuinely great person. Baseball lost an incredible talent, and he will be deeply missed. Our heartfelt condolences go out to our Cubs fan friends tonight.
And, since one our own was just inducted into the Hall of Fame Sunday, it seems like a good time to share Sandberg’s incredible speech upon his induction. RIP, Ryno.
With that said, everything seems less important, but, on to the recap.
Davis Martin started the game by striking out the side against the hottest batters on this Phillies team. Unfortunately, the offense was retired in order despite Austin Slater reaching the warning track. Martin kept the momentum going in the second, getting batters to ground out and his fourth strikeout, but once more, his teammates couldn’t even get on base.
Max Kepler and Bryson Stott both reached base with one out. After getting Trea Turner to strike out, Martin walked Kyle Schwarber to load the bases. Bryce Harper sent two runners home with a double, giving the Phillies an early 2-0 lead. Martin escaped any further damage by getting Nick Castellanos to strike out swinging. Lenyn Sosa got the first hit for the White Sox with a single to start the bottom of the third. With a beautiful swing, Colson Montgomery tied the game up after depositing the ball in right field.
Brandon Marsh singled and was left stranded in the fourth. Vargas reached, but ran into a force out after Andrew Benintendi’s single. Thankfully, not in vain as Luis Robert Jr. doubled the lead with a two-run blast to put the Sox up 4-2. Sosa singled with two outs, but any further runs were stifled when Montgomery flew out at the warning track. Fun fact: Before tonight, Cristopher Sánchez had allowed only two home runs in his last 10 starts.
Stott and Schwarber picked up walks in the fifth, and Harper singled. Thanks to a double play earlier in the frame, and a smart play by Martin, the Phillies left two stranded.

Martin was pulled in the sixth with two outs after giving up a single to Otto Kemp. Jordan Leasure stepped in to assist with the last out.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, Leasure walked Schwarber but escaped any damage. Sosa started the bottom of the frame with a walk, and with one out, Michael A. Taylor doubled. Chase Meidroth reached on a fielder’s choice out when Kemp threw Sosa out at home. That was the end of the night for Sánchez. All momentum ended just a play later as Mike Tauchman grounded out.
Steven Wilson kept the Phillies quiet in the eighth. Vargas singled with one out, and Benintendi drew a walk. Sosa, now working with two outs, sent a hit up the middle, tacking another run on the board to make it 5-2.
Montgomery followed up with another single to send Benintendi home before the end of the eighth.
Grant Taylor came in to close, and shut down any hope of a comeback, striking out two (and tossing at 100 mph) and retiring the Phillies in order.
