Gary police broke up a fight Tuesday at the Gary West Side Leadership Academy as students were leaving at the end of the school day, according to a social media post from the Gary Community School Corp.
It marked the second incident this year at the school. On Aug. 5, police arrested a Gary man who brought a gun to the school to confront a student.
On Tuesday, officials said at about 3:40 p.m. as dismissal began and buses were departing, two adults and several non-Gary students entered the parking lot “to engage in a physical altercation with a few students from WSLA.”
Gary police responded and two adults were arrested along with several non-West Side students.
Medics also responded to provide medical attention to students, if needed, the post said.
It added: “The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority. Continued support and collaboration with students, parents, families, and community stakeholders are essential as we work to maintain a secure environment for everyone.”
On Aug. 5, police arrested De’Andre Hicks after he allegedly brought a 40-mm Glock handgun to West Side to “defend a family member.”
He was charged Aug. 6 in Lake Superior Court with possession of a firearm on school property, a Level 6 felony.
In that incident, a school security officer saw two males arguing as school was dismissed and saw the gun in Hicks’ pocket as Hicks threatened to harm the student.
Authorities said Hicks fled to his car where school security detained him and placed him in a school security vehicle until Gary police arrested him.
His next court appearance is Nov. 5 before Judge Gina Jones.
