Why Tobias Myers Can Be A Sneaky X Factor For The Mets

February 13, 2026 by Last Word On Baseball

The Mets acquired their ace about a month ago when they traded for Freddy Peralta. Everyone was so focused on Peralta, yet no one really talked about the other piece in that trade. That other piece is 27-year-old Tobias Myers. Myers was a solid pitcher in his two seasons with the Brewers and can be an underrated X-factor for this team.

Tobias Myers Can Be An X-Factor For The Mets Wherever They Use Him

According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, Myers was told that the team is planning to stretch him back out to be a starter. This will start during Spring Training, as the Mets plan to use him for spot starts, most likely. David Stearns has also said that he is comfortable using him either in relief, for length, or as a starter. The Mets will see how Myers performs in spring training before determining his spot on the roster. This is huge for them, as they potentially have another starter. They could also use him as an innings eater. He is a flexible piece to this team already.

Myers Has Been Solid In The Small Time He’s Been In The Majors

Myers was really good in his two seasons with the Brewers. He went 9-6 with a 3 ERA in his first season with the team, where he was used as a starter and pitched 138 innings, striking out 127 batters. Then, last season, he had six starts but was mostly used as a reliever in the 22 games he appeared in. In those 22 games, he had a 3.55 ERA in 50.2 innings pitched with 38 strikeouts. Now, while the ERA did increase a bit, he still kept it below league average. Of course, it’s a small sample size considering it is only two seasons, but he has definitely shown he has potential to help out this Mets rotation/bullpen.

Myers Should Not Be Overlooked

The Mets will have Myers under control until at least 2028. He is a huge wild card for this team and is someone the team needed. Myers can play a part similar to what Trevor Williams was for the Mets in 2022. He was used as a long relief option, as well as a spot start type of pitcher. This will really benefit the Mets for this 2026 season, having a guy like Myers. Especially if some of the other options struggle out the gate or get injured.

This Is A Huge Opportunity For Myers

It will be interesting to see how Myers pans out for the Mets this season. He is someone who Mets fans should be very excited about as he is a versatile pitching option for this team. This Peralta trade might turn out to be a huge win for the Mets. Only time will tell of course, but this season could be a big year for all these new faces on the team. Let’s see how the Mets use Myers and how big of an impact he can have for the team this season.
