INDIANAPOLIS — Ivan Mastalski took the loss in Andrean’s last two postseason defeats, but not this time.
Pitching in relief, Mastalski allowed one run in 4 1/3 innings as the 59ers rallied to beat Jasper 4-3 to win the 3A state title at Victory Field on Friday night.
Mastalski (6-0), an Indiana recruit, earned the win for Andrean (31-3), which won its second state title in four years and ninth overall, all under coach Dave Pishkur. They share the record with Tim Bordenet and Lafayette Central Catholic, who also have won nine.
Andrean senior shortstop Mason Barth went to the mound with two runners on base and two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and, after intentionally walking a batter, recorded the final out on a strikeout for the save.
The 59ers trailed 2-0 through five but scored two runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings.
Senior outfielder Charlie Sollars was hit by a pitch to force in the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh, and senior designated hitter Steven Mack then walked to push home the run that proved to be the game-winner.
